software for your mobile device. Information on the installation of Microsoft ActiveSync is given in the
documentation to the program.
NOTE
The latest version of Microsoft ActiveSync is always available for download at:
http://www.microsoft.com.
NOTE
If your PC is running Windows Vista, you do not need to install ActiveSync.
ATTENTION!
Do not forget to make a backup copy of your mobile device data before the installation of any pro-
gram (including Oxford) to avoid the accidental loss of important data.

ATTENTION!
To use the dictionary, install the dictionary engine and at least one dictionary database.
You can install the Oxford engine with several dictionary databases. To install all databases, launch the
installation process for all dictionaries one after another. During the installation of additional word da-
tabases you should perform steps 1-5 described above. If the Oxford engine is already installed on your

ary Engine. During the installation of additional dictionary databases you can select the destination me-
dia: the main memory or an expansion card.
If several dictionaries are installed and activated for the same language pair (for example, English-
French Universal dictionary and English-French dictionary of Law), their dictionary databases are
merged. The wordlist used to find translation will then contain words from all activated dictionaries and
the word lookup is performed in the word database of all those dictionaries. You can activate or deacti-
vate installed dictionaries individually. If only one dictionary is activated, only its database will be used
for word lookup. If several dictionaries are activated, the wordlist you see on the screen contains the
words from all activated dictionaries.
If the translation of the word is present in several activated dictionaries, you can pass to its translation in
different dictionaries using Previous/Next dictionary buttons on the dictionary toolbar.
If several dictionaries of different directions are installed, you can select dictionary direction
in Dictionary>Translation direction. Changing translation directions is described in Translation di-
rection menu.

How Oxford can help you to learn a foreign
Oxford 6.1 for Pocket PC
language
Oxford dictionaries have several functions that can help you to learn a foreign language:
Paragon Software Group developed an algorithm for a Quiz based on effective time-proved methodic of
studing the foreign words with cards. The foreing word is written on the one side of the card and its
translation on another. To learn the translation you take any one card from the pile and see the foreing
word trying to remember its translation. Then you turn the card and see if you correctly remembered the
word.
In a similar, the Quiz in Oxford is implemented.
Unknown words found, for example, when reading the foreign literature can be added to the Flash
Cards and later you can take the Quiz for these cards.
- 27 -
How Oxford can help you to learn a foreign
Oxford 6.1 for Pocket PC
language
- 28 -
How Oxford can help you to learn a foreign
Oxford 6.1 for Pocket PC
language
Oxford will save the result and show the quiz statistics
when the quiz is finished: the number of right translations
recalled, the total number of cards shown and the number of
learned words.
The program saves statistics for several quizes and if you
often successfully recall the translation for a certain word,
this word is marked as “learned” and will not be included it
in the quiz any more.
To remember the words successfully you need to take a
Quiz from time to time.
Oxford program analizes the results of your quizes and when
you start the new Quiz Oxford chooses and shows the words
in such order which provides the best result to remember the
translation.
In a definite period the program includes the learned words
in the Quiz to refresh and strengthen your knowledge.
In the Flash Cards Quiz there is the Service menu. It al-
lows to: delete the current flash card (Delete card), Delete
all cards or select Always play sound. If you select Always
play sound, the pronunciation of every word that appears on
the screen will be played automatically (if it is included in
the Sound module installed on your device).

Oxford 6.1 for Pocket PC How to create your own dictionary
SlovoEd Studio
If you use the specific terms and for more effective work you need a special dictionary that includes
these terms you can create it by yourself.
SlovoEd Studio & Conversion Tools is a freeware program for advanced users. It allows you to con-
vert dictionary databases of different formats to the .prc format supported by the Oxford dictionary en-
gine. With SlovoEd Studio & Conversion Tools you can create dictionary databases out of the source
file you have chosen and set the layout that you prefer.
SlovoEd Studio & Conversion Tools program is installed on the desktop computer. The process is
very easy and fast. The compiler allows you to convert the resource database (*.dsl, * .wb, *.csv) into
the *.prc format, which can be used with Oxford dictionaries.
SlovoEd Studio not only helps you to compile a dictionary database, but also helps you to convert any
dictionary-like data to a handy format.
For example, you can organize a contact list or a kind of corporative database that contains information
on the products of your company.
This utility is more convenient than the standard instruments (such as Pocket Excel or a built-in Address
book), because it allows to markup all the entries quickly according to the logical structure of the en-
tries, and because the *.prc database which you get at the output is compatible with all mobile plat-
forms. Another advantage of a *.prc database is that it is significantly more compact than an ordinary
database, and the Oxford engine guarantees the fast search even if the *.prc file contains many thou-
sand entries.
To install a *.prc database on your device, you should:
1. Install the Oxford dictionary engine.
2. Use Microsoft ActiveSync Explore to copy your new *.prc database to the directory with dictionary
database on your device - for example, to My Device\Program Files\Paragon SlovoEd Dictionaries.
Do not delete the old dictionary database
3. Restart Oxford (select Dictionary>Exit and then run Oxford again).
4. Your new database should now be available in the Enable/Disable dicitonaries menu in the Ox-
ford program.
You can download the free copy of SlovoEd Studio at http://www.studio.penreader.com.

Appendix:
Sound module. Installation and usage
Many dictionary databases used with Oxford dictionary engine have always provided phonetic tran-
scription for the words. Now you can look at the translation and the transcription of a word, but also
you can listen to it and improve your pronunciation (the words are spoken by professional native speak-
ers).
Sound modules available for a specific language vary from maximally full versions to compact versions
that contain only pronunciation of the most frequently used words.
The more you use an unregistered sound module, the more often you hear a beep instead of the pronun-
ciation. You receive the registration code for your dictionary after purchasing the sound module (the
information on how to obtain your registration code is available in the section: How to get the registra-
tion code for program. For the information about Oxford dictionaries and available sound modules,
please visit our site: http://penreader.com/PocketPC.html.
There are two ways of registration of the Sound Module: Registration during the installation and
Registration after the installation.
