CAPTION
►Definition
Caption is a short piece of text under a picture in a book, magazine, oe newspaper that

describe the picture or explains what the people in it are doing or saying.

►Purpose

Describes the scene in the photo (name of person photographed, location,

date (sometimes), what they are doing in the photo,etc.)

►Generic Structure

• Attention getter : a mini headline that makes a direct link from the caption to the
Photo.
• Basic information : the first sentence that tells who and what is happening in the
photo. It uses present tense.
• Complementary information : a past tense sentence that adds information that is not
readily obvious in the photo. Usually contains
information that indicates the outcome or consequence of
the action in the photo.
• Direct quote : a quote from some one in the photo discussing an aspect of the event
captured in the picture. Quotes capture the thoughts of those who were
part of the event. Sometimes the quote swaps positions with the
complimentary information.

Every caption should contains the 5 W’s and H (Who, What, Where, Why, When,
How)

►The Characteristic of Caption


1. Caption must explain the picture using words or phrases
2. To make a good caption, the image quality must be paid attention, so the caption is more
attractive
3. In making caption, can’t use the words “showed, described, look on, above, below, etc.”
4. The caption must provide a true, accurate,and useful information
5. A good caption must explain the picture in detail
6. The caption usually doesn’t start with an article
7. If there are several people in a picture, in writing a caption, we can give word “left, from
left, right, from right.”
8. If we are forced to say someone’s name in the caption, make sure the name is really
important.
9. In making an English caption, should use standard tenses like : simple present or another
present tenses
10. In English caption usually use some variations like : adjective phrases.
