THEME TIMELINE
The Ramayana

Objective Summary: In the chapter, “When the Rains Cease”, Rama was going through this time of sadness because of the rainy season.
After the rainy season, Rama realized that Sugreeva had failed to keep his promise to arrive with his army. Rama sent Lakshmana to
Sugreeva’s palace and he was surrounded by all these different pleasures. After finally listening, he then brought his armies to Rama’s
camp. They called upon the commanders and set each of them in different directions to search for Sita. Hanuman and Angada went
southward. They were given a 30 day time limit by Rama. At the end of the month, they found themselves at a lost point, not being able to
find Sita. They then realized that Hanuman was given the ability to grow into any size and then return back to his normal size. So he grew in
order to cross the sea to reach Lanka.

Theme: It is one’s duty to uphold their promises

Chapter 7“When the Rains Cease”
“Yes, later. The rainy season is coming. At
the end of it, come with an army. There will
be time enough.” This contributes to the
theme because it shows when Rama had
been generous and let Sugreeva go back
and enjoy his palace. Sugreeva promised to
Rama his help and wanted to serve him, but
his time to uphold that promise would come
after the rainy season and he should still do
it even if it isn’t right away.
Chapter 7“When the Rains Cease
“You have all indulged in wrong acts without
thinking of morality or the consequences.
You gain your ends and then forget your
responsibilities. You do not possess
gratitude.” This contributes to the theme
because it shows how there could be
repercussions of your actions. It isn’t fair to
leave someone short after you obtain what
you want or need. Also not being grateful for
what you have been given on behalf of
someone else.
Chapter 7“When the Rains Cease
“I have failed in my duty, in my promise, lost
myself in pleasures. I have betrayed the
limits of the monkey mind. I do not have the
right to expect your forgiveness.” This
contributes to the theme because here
Sugreeva is accepting the fact that he did
lose himself in the satisfaction of being king.
He knew that Rama has been nothing less
than helpful to him. So it had only been right
that Sugreeva do the same thing

Evaluation: I agree with the theme because it is important to be there for people when they need you, especially if they have been there for
you. Promises can whether you keep them or not can either have a positive or negative outcome in the end. I also think this is a good theme
because whether you make it your duty to uphold your promise or not may also determine what type of person you are.
