Selective Listening

Grade Level: High School Spanish Level 3

SOL standard(s):
SIII.3 The student will understand spoken and written Spanish presented through a variety of
media and based on new topics in familiar contexts.
1. Identify main ideas and pertinent details when listening to or reading materials in a
familiar context; such as live and recorded conversations, short lectures, podcasts, videos,
reports, graphics, and literary selections.

ACTFL standard(s):
At the Intermediate Low sublevel, listeners are able to understand some information from
sentence-length speech, one utterance at a time, in basic personal and social contexts, though
comprehension is often uneven. At the Intermediate Low sublevel, listeners show little or no
comprehension of oral texts typically understood by Advanced-level listeners.

ACTFL level: Intermediate Low

Purpose/Objectives:

Language Objectives:
The student will be able to listen to school supply related vocabulary terms and identify their
meaning.
Content Objectives: The students will be able to define and identify key vocabulary terms in
Spanish.

Directions: The test-taker will listen to a short video clip and answer identification or
comprehension questions based on the listening. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzX3RPG-

Assessment items:

The test-taker will hear the clip two - three times.

The first time listening: The test-taker will hear: Llevas tu mochila? Si llevo la mochila con los
libros, el material escolar. (Do you have your backpack? Yes, I have my backpack with books
and school materials.)

The test-taker will read:

A. The student did not have their backpack (el alumno no tenía su mochila)
B. The backpack was empty (la mochila estaba vacía)
C. The student had a backpack with supplies. (el alumno tenía una mochila con material
escolar)
The second and third time listening the students will participate in a Cloze. They will use words
from the word bank. No words will be repeated. Not all words will be used.

Este es el colegio o la escuela. (This is the … Or the school) Vamos a entrar. (let’s go inside)
Aquí están las aulas o las clases. (Here are the classrooms or the …) La más grande es el que
tiene el reloj para ver el tiempo. (The biggest is the one with the clock to see the time).

Él es el profesor y nosotros somos los alumnos. (He is the teacher and we are the…) Muy bien
Pepito. Este es la pizarra donde explica las cosas. (Very good Pepito. This is the … Where we
explain things) Escribe con la tiza y usa el borrador para borrar. Write with the … And the … to
erase).

Word Bank:

tiza clases colegio alumnos sillas pizarra el reloj borrador lápiz

Scoring:

For the comprehension questions- correct answers will only be counted.

For the cloze questions, each word is worth 1 point. All questions must be spelled correctly to
earn points.
