2nd Grade: Boom whacker Compositions

Essential Question: What songs can we compose using our boom whackers?
What are appropriate ways to perform and listen to a composition?
Objectives:
Ss will prepare to perform a boom whacker composition and learn about standard performance
and audience expectations.

Materials: Boom whackers, piano, solfege ladder, composition sheets

Procedures:

1. Hello Song
a. Students get situated – give the phone to a model student
b. Pass it around the room to hear a variety of voices
2. Composition completion
a. Remind of Kagan order – project the cycle on the board
b. Distribute materials
c. Have to be finished by end of class today!
d. Performing next time
3. If you finish early....
a. Name your composition!
b. Everyone must agree on the name and it must be school appropriate
c. Come and get a rhythm sheet!
d. If you finish the sheet, try clapping rhythms for your team – can they guess the rhythm?
4. Performance standards
a. I will be conductor – what is a conductor?
b. Students will stand in the front
c. Audience will listen and applaud
d. Performers do not talk

ASSESSMENT: READ COMPOSITIONS – Determine if students followed directions, if they could follow
boom whacker notations, if the teams could cooperate for the final product
Monitor general classroom behavior
Assess individual class cooperation in groups + prep to assess individual playing - steady beat,
confidence in front of class, audience behaviour, ability to play bw (jot notes on back of comps?)
Check the work of finished groups – is it quality? Did they understand the concept/project? If
not, how can this be changed for the next class?
