monitoring, data extraction and
setting changes on remote devices
(primarily protective relays) within the
substation environment.

K-Bus The 64 kbps twisted pair cable used

to connect relays and transfer Courier
data.

PAS&T An abbreviation for Protection Access

Software and Toolkit which is PC
based software used to access relay
functions using Courier
communications.

KITZ The interface unit which converts

between K-Bus and RS232/IEC870
format data.

IEC870 An abbreviated term for the

communication standard IEC870-5
FT1.2 which is used to transfer
Courier data over modems and
RS232 connections.

Optimho GEC ALSTHOM distance protection

relay, also designated LFZP.

Opticom The software package used to

communicate with Optimho relays.

RS232/IEC870 Port Refers generally to the serial port of

the KITZ 101/102/103 interface unit,
however, IEC870 frame format of the
serial port data is only available
selectively on the KITZ 101/102 unit.

Relay/Device The terms “relay” and “device” refer

to K-Bus Courier communicatiing
devices such as protection relays,
input/output devices, measurement
centres or similar.
