Gender and sex:
❑ Gender and sex are different things
❑ Sex refers to anatomy
❑ Gender is a social category and refers to behavior and feelings.
❑ Your gender identity is your own perception of your gender and what label you choose to use
❑ Gender expression is how you convey, e.g. through clothing
❑ Sometimes your gender and sex don’t match up.
❑ Male and female are common genders and together they are called the gender binary.

What is LGBTQ?
❑ LGBTQ is an acronym for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer or questioning
❑ These terms are used to describe a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity
✓ LESBIAN
A woman whose enduring physical, romantic, and/or emotional attraction is to other women.
✓GAY
People whose enduring physical, romantic, and/or emotional attractions are to people of the same sex.
✓BISEXUAL
A person who has the capacity to form enduring physical, romantic, and/or emotional attractions to those of the same gender or to those of
another gender. People may experience this attraction in differing ways and degrees over their lifetime.
✓TRANSGENDER
An umbrella term for people whose gender identity and/or gender expression differs from what is typically associated with the sex they were
assigned at birth. People under the transgender umbrella may describe themselves using one or more of a wide variety of terms— including
transgender. Many transgender people are prescribed hormones by their doctors to bring their bodies into alignment with their gender identity.
✓QUEER
An adjective used by some people, particularly younger people, whose sexual orientation is not exclusively heterosexual. Typically, for those who
identify as queer, the terms lesbian, gay, and bisexual are perceived to be too limiting .Some people may use queer, or more commonly gender-
queer, to describe their gender identity and/or gender expression.
✓QUESTIONING
This term describes someone who is questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Pride flags:

LGBTQ Aromantic Asexual Pansexual

Gender-queer Agender Bisexual Transgender

❑Pride flags are common symbols used to identify a particular group in the LGBTQ
community.
❑They can also give people an important sense of identity and community.
→LGBTQ: This is the six striped version of the pride flag. Originally each color has its
own meaning (life, healing, sunlight, nature, serenity and spirit) but now the rainbow is said to
reflect the diversity of the LGBTQ community.
→Aromantic: Do not experience romantic attraction
→Asexual: Do not experience sexual attraction
→Pansexual: Attraction to all genders
→Gender-queer: a person who does not subscribe to conventional gender distinctions but
identifies with neither, both, or a combination of male and female genders
→Agender: Having no gender
→Transgender: Gender identity and sex do not match up
Common problems:
❑Some people think asexual people are broken or weird.
❑Bisexual people get stigmatized as greedy or liars and are extensively under-
represented in the media.
❑Gay is still used as a derogatory term.
❑Transgender and non-binary people live in a strictly male/female world, e.g. the
issue of male/female toilets or job applications which ask for your gender but only
have two options.
❑Sometimes these people are refused access to benefits reserved for people of their
gender identity but not their assigned sex.
❑These issues can lead to very serious consequences. It is now widely documented
that LGBTQ people have a higher prevalence of mental health problems, as well as
being more likely to self harm or attempt suicide.
❑ A survey by PACE (LGBT mental health charity) concluded that 48% of trans
people under 26 had attempted suicide, compared with 6% of all 16-24 year olds.

Trump and the LGBTQ
❑President Donald Trump’s campaign has introduced new
LGBTQ Pride merchandise
❑The merchandise includes a white T-shirt that reads “Make
America Great Again” in rainbow letters
❑The product description reads, “Show your support for the LGBT
community and the 45th President with this exclusive Make
America Great Again T-Shirt.”
❑The site is also selling a rainbow "Make America Great Again"
hat.
❑Trump selling "Pride" shirts when his administration attacks
LGBTQ people
❑Trump’s campaign has been criticized as “hypocritical” for
selling LGBTQ merchandise
❑Earlier this year, during LGBTQ Pride month, the campaign
unveiled another white T-shirt with a rainbow flag that read
“LGBTQ for Trump.“
❑Buzz Feed journalist David Mack wrote on Twitter at the time:
Supreme Court cases:
❑Four years ago, the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage across the United States, and many Americans believed
the fight for LGBTQ equality was finally won.
❑But that ruling did not address all the ways LGBTQ people experience discrimination in their everyday lives.
❑Same-sex partners can now legally marry, but in a majority of states you can still be fired for being gay.
❑Half of LGBTQ adults live in states where no laws ban job discrimination.
❑Three cases: from New York, Michigan and Georgia involving workers who claim they were fired because they were gay
or transgender:
→A New York skydiving instructor, Donald Zarda, said he was fired because he was gay. He has died, but his
sister and his life partner continue to press the case.
→A Georgia county government employee, Gerald Bostock, alleged he was fired from his job as a child
welfare services coordinator because he is gay.
→A Michigan transgender woman, Aimee Stephens, said she was fired from the funeral home where she
worked for six years as Anthony Stephens because of her transition from male to female.
❑A.J. Celento, who lives in Nashville with his husband, Josh Corey, said he was let go from his job at a local restaurant
when management learned he was married to a man → The couple lost their health insurance, their income and the apartment
they had just been given the keys to. The experience was financially and emotionally devastating
