Sustainable Development Goal 3 focuses on the Good Health and Well Being which ensures healthy lives
and promote wellbeing for all at all ages. SDG 3 aims to end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria
and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases and other communicable
diseases. The afformentioned epidemics include Dengue Virus Infection which is a mosquito-borne viral
disease that has rapidly spread in recent years. Dengue virus is transmitted by female mosquitoes mainly
of the species Aedes aegypti and, to a lesser extent, Ae. albopictus. These mosquitoes are also vectors of
chikungunya, yellow fever and Zika viruses. Dengue is widespread throughout the tropics, with local
variations in risk influenced by rainfall, temperature, relative humidity and unplanned rapid urbanization.

Dengue causes a wide spectrum of disease. This can range from subclinical disease (people may not
know they are even infected) to severe flu-like symptoms in those infected. Although less common,
some people develop severe dengue, which can be any number of complications associated with severe
bleeding, organ impairment and/or plasma leakage. Severe dengue has a higher risk of death when not
managed appropriately. Severe dengue was first recognized in the 1950s during dengue epidemics in the
Philippines. Today, severe dengue affects most our country and has become a leading cause of
hospitalization and death among children and adults specifically this year 2019.

The Department of Health reported a total of 146,062 dengue cases from January to July 2019 which
lead to the declaration of national dengue epidemic as cases of the mosquito-borne disease continued
to rise in the country. Based on DOH data, Western Visayas had the highest number of cases, with 23,330
for the first 7 months of the year. Meanwhile Central Visayas (Region VII) also exceeded from the alert
threshold level with 10,728 cases. In Cebu City alone, there are 1,396 reported cases of dengue from
January until July this year. This latest number of dengue cases is 40.72 percent higher than the 992
dengue cases and six deaths recorded in the same period in 2018. Closely monitored are nine villages in
Cebu City—Apas, Guadalupe, Pit-os, Basak San Nicolas, Lahug, Camputhaw, Mambaling, Bonbon and
Bacayan.

Since then, the villages have reactivated their respective dengue brigades to curb the increase in dengue
cases. Another way to prevent Dengue is through the implementation of the 4-S strategy by the
Department of Health (DOH) in the household such as Search and destroy mosquito-breeding sites, Self-
protection measures like wearing long pants and long sleeved shirts and daily use of mosquito repellent,
Seek early consultation, and Support fogging/spraying only in hotspot areas where increase in cases is
registered for two consecutive weeks to prevent an impending outbreak.
As a proposed solution, our group had come up with a Permethrin- Fused Fabric Conditioner. Permethrin
is used in a number of ways to control insects. Products containing permethrin may be used in public
health mosquito control programs. Permethrin can affect insects if they eat it or touch it. Permethrin
affects the nervous system in insects, causing muscle spasms, paralysis and death. Permethrin is more
toxic to insects than it is to people and dogs. Also, the use of permethrin lessens the health implications
to humans as compared to the other chemicals that are being used in killing pests and insects.

Far from that, while children may be especially sensitive to pesticides compared to adults, there are
currently no data to suggest that children have increased sensitivity specifically to permethrin. From this,
we could say that our proposed product can be used by all ages. Which allows our proposed solution to
promote healthy lives and well being for all ages by preventing mosquitoes from infecting Dengue Virus.
