(3) Is America an empire? Are we rising in power or falling? How can we learn from these
empires to make our country better?

YOU WILL HAVE A TEST ON THESE EMPIRES AT THE END OF PRESENTATIONS, so your hw every
night will be to create flashcards and study. At any time, you may have a POP QUIZ where you can
use your notes so make sure you are taking detailed notes and bringing your notes to class every
day.
 An optional way to review is to read the textbook sections for these empires. Ming p.102-
103, Qing p.205, Ottoman p.75, Tokugawa p. 109-110, Aztec p.122, Inca p.122, Mughal p.82-
86

provide you with a perfect example and you will have to fix examples that have mistakes in them or
create new bibliographies.

This study guide will be collected with your test, flashcards and short answers will be checked daily.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR HW: CREATING FLASHCARDS

(1) Flashcards do NOT need to be on index cards but this preferred. It is fine to use pieces of paper.
(2) Put an important question about them on front
(3) Put the DEFINITION on back and LABEL the name of the empire
(4) Draw a quick picture to help you remember

(1) Isolationism may seem like a good way to protect yourself, but ultimately it reduces trade and
prevents you from learning from other cultures.
(2) Social customs - like the religion/philosophy of Confucianism and Bushido is a good way to control
people as they are now UNIFIED by a common belief and feel united by a common goal and culture.
People who feel like the belong to something are less likely to rebel.

Review: BIG IDEAS FROM THE NEW WORLD CIVILIZATIONS

1) Creating a common culture helps rule over a people, the Aztecs and Incans did that through religion.
2) You can also rule through fear and order – having a strict criminal justice system or a road system that
makes it easy to crush rebellions.
