A 230 V, 1000 rpm, 30 A separately excited DC motor has
an armature resistance of 0.7 Ω and inductance of 50mH.
Motor is controlled in regenerative braking by a chopper
operating at a frequency of 800 Hz from a DC source of 230
V. Assuming continuous conduction, (i) Calculate duty ratio
of chopper for rated torque and speed of 800 rpm. (ii) What
will be the motor speed for duty ratio of 0.6 and rated motor
1. torque? (iii) What will be the maximum allowable speed of CO3
the motor, if the chopper has a maximum duty ratio of 0.9
and maximum allowable motor current is twice the rated
current? (iv) Calculate power fed to the source for operating

1.Explain the operation of single phase semi converter fed separately excited d.c.
motor drive with necessary waveforms
2. Explain the speed torque characteristics of a D.C series motor connected to a three phase fully controlled converter.
3. DC shunt motor operating from a 1-φ half controlled bridge at a speed of 1450
rpm has an input voltage 330sin 314t and a back emf 75V. The SCRs are fired
symmetrically at α=π/3 in every half cycle and the armature has a resistance of 5Ω.
Neglecting armature inductance, find the average armature current and the torque
4. A separately excited D.C motor is supplied from 220 V, 50 Hz source through a 1-Φ half wave controlled
converter. Its field is fed through 1-phase semi converter with zero degree firing angle delay. Motor resistance Ra =
0.5 Ω and motor constant = 0.5 V-sec/rad. For rated load torque 10 N-m at 1000 rpm and for continuous ripple free
current, determine the firing angle delay of the armature converter.
5.Explain the operation of Single Phase Fully Controlled Converter fed separately excited DC motor in both
continuous and discontinuous current modes with relevant waveforms. Derive the expressions for Torque –
Speed relation, critical value of induced e.m.f and critical speed.
6. A separately excited DC motor at 10 kW, 300 V, 1000 rpm is supplied from 3- phase half controlled bridge
rectifier. The three phase supply is rated at 220 V, 50 Hz. Armature resistance of motor Ra = 0.2 Ω and sufficient
inductance is added to maintain continuous conduction. It delivers rated power at rated speed when. If the firing
angle is retarded to , calculate the speed, power factor and efficiency of the operation if: (a) The load torque is
constant. (b) The load torque is proportional to speed.

rpm, has an input voltage of 330 Sin 314t and a back emf 80 V. The SCR’s are fixed symmetrically at α=30° in
every half cycle and the armature has a resistance of 4Ω . Calculate the average armature current and the motor
torque.

1.Discuss briefly the stator voltage control scheme of induction motor. Also draw and explain
the speed torque curves.
2.A static Kramer drive is used for the speed control of a 6-pole SRIM fed from 400 V, 50
Hz supply. The inverter is connected directly to the supply. If the motor is required to operate
at 800 rpm, find the firing advance angle of the inverter. Voltage across the open-circuited
slip rings at stand-still is 600 V. Allow a voltage drop of 0.7 V and 1.5 V across each of the
diodes and thyristors respectively. Inductor drop is neglected.
3. Discuss in detail speed control of three phase induction motor through stator frequency for
the following conditions:
A) Below rated frequency
B) Above rated frequency
4. A three phase, 420 V, 4 pole, 50 Hz star connected slip ring induction motor has its speed
controlled by means of GTO chopper in its rotor circuit. The effective phase turns ratio from rotor to
