Activity Title: Most Common: Emerging and Remerging diseases (Leptospirosis, severe acute respiratory

syndrome (SARS), Chikungunya, Meningococcemia)

Learning Competency/ies: Analyzes the nature of emerging and reemerging diseases (H8DD-IIId-e20)
Reference: google

Influenza A (H1N1) virus is

the subtype of influenza A
virus that was the most
common cause of
human influenza (flu) in
2009, and is associated
with the 1918 outbreak
known as the Spanish Flu. Some strains of H1N1 are endemic in humans and cause a small fraction of
all influenza-like illness and a small fraction of all seasonal influenza. H1N1 strains caused a small percentage
of all human flu infections in 2004–2005.[2] Other strains of H1N1 are endemic in pigs (swine influenza) and in
birds (avian influenza).

Activity Title: Agencies Responsible for Communicable Disease prevention and control
Learning Competency/ies: Identifies agencies responsible for communicable disease prevention
and control (H8DD-IIIf -h23)
Reference: google

Government agencies were created to target the prevention and control of communicable and
chronic diseases, as well as HIV, leptospirosis, dengue, measles, influenza, and others. The National
Center for Disease Prevention and Control is the government agency responsible for conducting
studies on the pathology of disease, its prevention, and cure.
The Department of Health (DOH) retains the overall technical authority on health, as it is a national
health policy-maker and regulatory institution. Basically, DOH has three major roles in the health
sector:
Leadership in public health programs and policies
Enabler and capacity builder of health institutions and infrastructure
Administration of specific health services
Some of the DOH-attached agencies are as follows:
National Center for Disease Prevention and Control. The center is tasked with developing plans,
policies, projects, and strategies for disease prevention and control and health protection. It is also
tasked to provide coordination, capability building, and advisory services. Some of its well-know
programs include the “Ligtas Tigdas” and “Kontra Dengue” programs which are conceptualized in
coordination with this agency.
National Epidemiology Center. This agency is expected to develop surveillance and other health
information systems. Part of its responsibilities is to maintain routine surveillance and other health
information systems.

Exercises:
1. What agency is the overall technical authority on health?
2. What are the three major roles in the health sector of the DOH?
