Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

Letting students choose any program (with prior approval) to create their movie allows them to explore their
creativity and technology skills. Movies also incorporate audio and visual learning. Many programs allow
captioning as well for hearing impaired students.

Lesson idea implementation:

Students will watch the movie provided as an introduction to the industrial revolution. After the movie, tell
students to get into groups of 3-4 people. As a group they will pick an invention from the industrial
revolution, and research it. They must create a movie explaining what it is and how it affected the economy at
the time. They can use iMovie or adobe spark any other approved (by the teacher) movie making tool. Their
movie must be at least 2 minutes long with audio.
Students will present their movies to the class. Each invention will be on the test, so it is important that
students take note of their peers’ presentations.
Importance of technology:
Technology is important to this project so that they can create a movie that integrates narration/music with
images/videos. They could create a poster or PowerPoint, but this provides an opportunity for them to create
a new type of product.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

Students need to be careful that any media they use is not copyrighted. Also, if they decide to make a video
that includes themselves (visually), it is important that the teacher does not share it without parental
permission.

MultiMedia Tools
I may need to have a workshop day before this lesson where I teach students how to use IMovie and other
movie maker tools. I think it is worth it though to create meaningful products that give students skills they can
use in the future.
