Title of Lesson Sunlight & Colours Grade Level 1

Subject Science Time Frame 1:50-2:40

Developed By Hailey Rausch

Stage 1: Desired Results

General
Identify and evaluate methods for creating colour and for applying colours to different
Learning
materials
Outcome(s)
Specific
Learning Demonstrate at least one way to separate sunlight into component colours.
Outcome(s)
Students will be able to:
• Illustrate how sunlight is broken down into component colours by drawing their
Learning
observation of our experiment.
Objective(s)
• Recall that white light can be separated into the colours of the spectrum during a class
discussion and thumbs up, thumbs down formative assessment.

Stage 2: Assessment Evidence

put our looking glasses. Discuss quiet coyote, and my expectations. Circulate the room

you to think and talk about what colour the light from the sun is,
using your whisper voices.

*Quiet coyote to bring everyone back in*

*I will select a student from each pod to tell me what they
discussed.*

Now we are going to do an experiment. Please walk to come and

join me on the carpet.

We are going to turn off the lights, close the blinds, and I am going
to shine a flashlight onto a mirror sitting in a container of water and
a plastic jewel. Before we start, I want you to come up with a
prediction (reasonable guess) of what is going to happen in your
head.

While I am showing you the experiment, I want you to remember

what you are seeing on the roof, because afterwards you will be
recording it on the piece of paper that I am going to give you by
drawing. This is called an observation.

*Show the demonstration of separating light.*

Now after observing me shine a flashlight onto both a mirror in

water and into a plastic jewel, think about what you saw. In your
observation you must draw every part of the experiment, such as
the objects used and the results (what you saw on the roof.) Please
go find your seats quietly, and I will bring you an observation sheet.

Observation & Thinking Questions

*Allow students to make drawings of their observations*

*When time is up I will have the students place their drawing in the
done bin and return to their seats.*

Ask thinking questions and have students raise their hands to

• Does anyone know of another way to make a rainbow? (Correct
answers: rain, mist, crystals, oil, bubbles)

*Discuss how light from the sun appears to be white or even yellow,
but it is actually made up of the 7 colours of the rainbow known as
the spectrum.

Formative Assessment:

After making predictions, observing the experiment, recording our

observations, discussing light, and watching a video on the topic we
are going to answer questions to see how much we learned. If you
think the answer is yes, give me a thumbs up, if you think the answer
is no, give me a thumbs down. Now is everyone ready?

*Thumbs Up Thumbs Down: Students respond to the questions by

answering “yes” with a thumbs up, and “no” with a thumbs down.

10 min • Is light made up of the colour red on the spectrum only? No

• Is light made up of the colours of the rainbow? Yes
• Can we see the components of light using a crystal? Yes
• Can we see the components of light using a rock? No
• Is spectrum the correct name for colours of the rainbow? Yes
• Are there 5 colours in the colour spectrum? No
• Are there 7 colours in the colour spectrum?Yes
• Are the colours in the rainbow/ spectrum red, orange, yellow,
green, teal, indigo, pink? No

When we are done the questions, pod groups will be released one at
a time based on their behavior.
