Michigan’s Regions!
For elementary school teachers
Michigans Regions
What is a region
Regions are simply a place divided based on similar
characteristics they share. Michigan is divided up based on
geographical characteristics. It is also broken down based on
what functions each has. For example car manufacturing
belongs in SouthEastern more towards Detroit, while
Tourism, and Agriculture belong to Northern. As seen on the
next slide, it can be broken down into many regions.
However, for teaching 3rd grade, it is broken down into 5
regions.
Upper Peninsula
Major Counties Mackinac, Chippewa, Marquette

Characteristics:
Northern Michigan
Major Counties: Traverse City, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Kalkaska

Characteristics:
Central Michigan
Major Counties: Saginaw, Bay, Clare, Huron, St. Clair, Lapeer

Characteristics:
Western Michigan
Major counties: Muskegon, Ottawa, Kalamazoo

Characteristics:
Southeastern Michigan
Major Counties: Oakland, Wayne, Monroe, Jackson
