Lesson Plan in World History: Ancient Egypt Civilization for Grade 8 Students

I. Objectives

Students must be able to do the following at the end of the lesson:

 Evaluate the importance of the Nile River to the ancient Egyptians and explain how
it influenced the way they lived.
 Analyze and identify differences between the three major time periods of ancient
Egypt and their distinct characteristics.
 Discuss the life in ancient Egypt.
 Realize the impact and legacy of the ancient Egypt civilization to the world.

II. Subject Matter

Ancient Egypt and Kush

Reference: McGraw-Hill’s Discovering Our Past: A History of the World pp. 97-136

Materials: video presentation downloaded from www.youtube.com, projector, laptop,


speakers, video worksheets (questions and answers), handouts, rubrics for the display
board, and power point presentation

III. Procedure

A. Motivation: Flocabulary

1. Teacher will begin:


a. By playing the Ancient Egypt flocab (http://www.flocabulary.com/ancient-
egypt/).
b. Instruct students to pick out 3 interesting facts that are new information for
them.
2. Students will:
a. Listen to the song and record 3 new facts.
b. Turn and talk to a partner and share their facts.
3. Teacher will facilitate the sharing activity.
B. Discussion:

1. Discuss the Nile River and its importance to the development of ancient Egypt.
2. Teacher then will show and explain the timeline of ancient Egypt.
3. Analyze and explain the three major periods of ancient Egypt and their distinct
characteristics.
4. Teacher will show a 6-minute video presentation about the ancient Egypt
civilization and its lasting impact to the world. Video was downloaded from: https:
//www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO1tzmi1V5g
a. Before the showing of the video, the following questions will be asked first
so that students will be guided in their watching.
i. What is a ‘pharaoh’ and what is his role?
ii. What did these pharaohs do to prepare for the afterlife?
iii. How do ancient Egyptians make a ‘mummy?’
iv. What do the pyramids represent?
v. What are some of the innovation made by ancient Egyptians? Give
3 and explain each of them.
vi. How did the ancient Egyptian empire come to an end?
b. Using the same groups from the previous activity, the mentioned questions
will be answered by the members of the group. Teacher will facilitate the
sharing activity.

C. Individual Activity: Decorative Decodes (Be an Archaeologist)

1. The teacher will give out the hieroglyphic alphabet handout to guide the students.
2. The students will write (with any color of permanent marker preferably black) their
full names in any order (middle, last, then first - or however) on a sheet of white
typing paper using hieroglyphic symbols.
3. When finished, stain the papers in tea water and mount them on cardboard paper
or folder (but they have to cut it out).
4. The students will have 3 days to decode all the papers and figure out who’s was
whose.
5. The student who finished first or who got the most number of decoded names will
be the winner and special incentive will be given. This is a speed test for the
students.

IV. Evaluation: ABC of Ancient Egypt

1. The teacher will handout the worksheets for the assessment.


2. Students for every letter must write a short summary on something that relates to
Ancient Egypt. Two sentence minimum, topics will be provided.
3. The teacher will discuss the point system of the assessment.

V. Assignment:

1. Make a short essay with this question: If you could be anyone in ancient Egypt
except for the pharaoh, who would you choose? Explain the reasons for your
choice. Make sure to include the advantages and disadvantages of your social
position.
