Testing the receptive and productive vocabulary skills of CNHS students:

Basis for instructional plan

This study was undertaken to primarily determine the level of receptive and

productive vocabulary skills and the academic performance of the students of Capisan

National High School, Zamboanga City. In order to derive the desired outcome for this

study, the quantitative method of research was employed. A standardized VLT or

Vocabulary Levels Test was utilized to gather the data needed where the researcher used

the frequency count specifically the mean to get the level of both receptive and productive

vocabulary skills and the academic performance of the respondents from the 2,000 to

3,000 VLT. While t-test and Pearson Product Moment Correlation were utilized to

determine the significant difference and relationship between the receptive and

productive vocabulary skills and the academic performance of the respondents. The

findings of the study revealed that the level of receptive vocabulary skills of Capisan

National High School students is average while the level of productive vocabulary skills

is low. Which can be reflected to their academic performance which is satisfactory.

Furthermore, there is a significant difference between the receptive and productive

vocabulary skills of Capisan National High School students when grouped according to

their grade level and sex. And there is a significant relationship between the receptive

and productive vocabulary skills and the academic performance of the students. The
findings imply that the receptive vocabulary skills of the respondents are relative to their

productive skills. Thus, as the respondents' grade level becomes higher, the receptive

and productive vocabulary skills also increases and consequently, the respondent’s

receptive and productive vocabulary skills reflect to their academic performance.
