Cement Deep Mixing & Discussion on a Case Study of Failure of

an Embankment on Soil-Cement Column–Improved Clay Deposit

In this article, a brief discussion of one of soil improvisation techniques called deep cement
mixing is done and a case study is discussed as well.
The case study is about failure of a fully constructed section of a road in Saga of Japan. The
roadway was constructed over an embankment around Ariake Sea in the Saga Plain in Kyushu,
Japan. The reference article is “Failure of an Embankment on Soil-Cement Column–Improved
Clay Deposit: Investigation and Analysis” by Hino, T., Shrestha, S., & Chai, J. published on
Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering Volume 145 Issue 9. However,
other relevant research papers will also be studied for the comparison of the case study and
any inferred conclusions.
The article will be divided into following sections and subsections:
1. Definition, uses, pros & cons of Cement Deep Mixing.
2. Case Study
a. Site condition and embankment construction
b. Observed Behavior and failure accident
c. Discussion on forensic investigation
d. Discussion on forensic analysis
e. Limitations of the case study
3. conclusion
