Merry Christmas

“It’s almost Christmas again. I wonder how Ruthie and Jim are doing in their new place.”
“3000 square feet. I’d say they’re doing great.”
“But it’s a barn.”
“Jim’s fixed it up. Got a set of fifteen big triple glaze windows 90% off that’d been sized wrong,
and a complete set of kitchen cupboards from a renovation in Melfort.”
“She quit her job?”
“She’s already working part time for the health region.’
“Didn’t she get a Master’s degree in Nursing from New York University?”
“In therapeutic touch. That’s where it was invented. She met the ”
“She sure’s into all that natural stuff. Why’d she have both her kids by Cesarian? She’s a big
heathy girl.”
“Her herpes started flared up just before both births. The boys could’ve ended up with neonatal
herpes.”
“All in the family.” She chuckled.
“It could’ve resulted in serious damage to their central nervous system.”
“What’s little Stevie up to these days? Wasn’t he going to be a writer?”
“He’s taking over the bee operation. In the winter he goes to California to study Zen, does a
little dumpster diving in Saskatoon. You wouldn’t believe the chicken he brings home.”
“Where’s the bee operation?”
“Downstairs, in the barn. It’s walled off pretty good. I guess the odd bee gets upstairs, but
they’re all used to it. Big step up from living with Gordie in that chicken coop in Martensville.”
“Honestly!. That Ruthie! Has she ever lived in a granary? I remember she spent a winter living in
an airstream trailer outside of Ottawa with Fox. And then there was Stafford in the Halifax
dump.”
“I felt bad enough living in a condo! Did they just let them live in the dump?”
“Stafford was living there to protest the government or something. He’d built a cute little
plywood shack on the back of his half-ton.”
