Grade: Grade 2 Health Lesson Title: Empathy Lesson Duration (mins): 25

Overview of lesson
This lesson has been designed to address the idea of being empathetic in everyday life for grade 2 students. The focus
of this lesson is for students to understand the feelings associated with being empathetic as well as the feelings
associated with having empathy shown to them. To begin, students will be asked to predict or say what they think the
word empathy means. Throughout the lesson, students will be directed through a presentation of what empathy is
and will participate/respond by drawing the emotions felt by people after being read a scenario. By the end of the
lesson, students will have represented different feelings and understand how someone might need different
treatment because of those feelings.

Lesson Procedures
Introduction (4 min):
Attention Grabber (1 min): Chimes (to bring them to the carpet)
Expectations for Learning and Behavior (2 min):
• Let students know that their usual expected behaviour is still applicable

• Remind students to raise their hand when they want to ask or answer a question

Transition (1 min):
• During this time, students will shift their bodies so that they are looking at the Smart Board to see the

• One student who has done well all class will be asked to collect the whiteboards from each student and put
them away

• Students will review the concepts of the lesson by engaging in a class wide version of the activity. The teacher
will pick a scenario and students will (by raising their hand) tell the teacher what kind of face they should
draw
