FLEXURAL STRENGTH TEST OF CONCRETE

(ASTM C 293 Standard test method for Flexural Strength of Concrete (Using Simple Beam with Center-
Point Loading)

OBJECTIVE
To determine the flexural strength of concrete using simple beam with center-point loading.

SCOPE OF THE TEST

This test method is used to determine the modulus of rupture of specimens prepared and cured in
accordance with specifications. The strength determined will vary where there are differences in specimen
size, preparation, moisture condition, curing. The results of this test method may be used to determine
compliance with specifications or as a basis for proportioning, mixing and placement operations. It is
used in testing concrete for the construction of slabs and pavements.

MATERIALS AND APPARATUS

• Flexural Specimens (Beam)

• Vernier caliper
• Universal Testing Machine
• Accessories for Flexural Testing
• Weighing scale

TEST PROCEDURE
1. Test specimens should be prepared in accordance to all applicable standards.
2. The thickness and width of the beam are measured.
3. Since the strength of concrete varies considerably in its state of dryness and temperature, the
test specimen should be tested under the condition of immediately after the curing period.
4. Proper accessories of the UTM should be attached prior to zero calibration of the machine.
5. The specimen is located so that the upper surface is to the side and centered in loading
assembly.
6. The machine is operated until the loading block was brought in contact with the upper
surfaces of the specimen. Full contact between the load surfaces and the specimen is endured
to secure.
7. Start/apply load in the specimen to start the flexural test.
8. The specimen is observed, as the load was gradually applied.
9. The maximum load is recorded and loading is continued until complete failure.
DATA
Average width Average depth Length Max. Load Modulus of Age of
(mm) (mm) (mm) (N) rupture specimens
Specimen no. 1 101 100 401 4709 2.75 MPa 7 days
Specimen no. 2 102 101 403 4415 2.56 MPa 7 days
Specimen no. 3 103 100 403 5101 3.05 MPa 7 days

CALCULATIONS AND RESULTS

Calculate the modulus of rupture as follows:
3𝑃𝐿
𝑅=
2𝑏𝑑 2
Where:
R = modulus of rupture, Mpa
P = maximum applied load indicated by the testing machine, N
L = span length, mm
b = average width of specimen, mm
d = average depth of specimen, mm

Calculation of specimen no. 1

3𝑃𝐿
𝑅 = 2𝑏𝑑2
3(4709 𝑁)(401 𝑚𝑚)
= 2(103 𝑚𝑚)(100 𝑚𝑚)2

= 2.75 MPa

Calculation of specimen no. 2

3𝑃𝐿
𝑅=
2𝑏𝑑2

3(4415 𝑁)(403 𝑚𝑚)

= 2(102 𝑚𝑚)(101 𝑚𝑚)2

= 2.56 MPa
Calculation of specimen no. 2
3𝑃𝐿
𝑅 = 2𝑏𝑑2
3(5101 𝑁)(403 𝑚𝑚)
= 2(101 𝑚𝑚)(100 𝑚𝑚)2

= 3.05 MPa

DISCUSSION
Flexural strength is one measure of the tensile strength of concrete. It is a measure of an
unreinforced concrete beam or slab to resist failure in bending. The specimens measured by
loading 100 x 100-mm concrete beams with a span length of 400 mm (at least three times the
depth). The flexural strength is expressed as modulus of rupture in MPa and is determined by
standard test method ASTM C293 (center-point loading).

The flexural testing is predominantly used in industries where materials are subject to
some form of bending force. The construction industry is a typical example in that the most
common test for structural steels, concrete beams, timber joists, GRC panels, ceramic tiles is
flexural testing.

Designers of pavements use a theory based on flexural strength. Therefore, laboratory

mix design based on flexural strength tests may be required, or a cementitious material conetent
may be selected from past experience to obtain the needed design MR (Modulus of Rupture).

CONCLUSION
As shown above, the data and results of the flexural strength test of concrete, given that
the modulus of rupture of specimen no. 1, specimen no. 2 and specimen no. 3 are as follows;
2.75 MPa, 2,56 MPa, and 3.05 Mpa respectively. From the experiment, bigger values in
dimensions give higher value of flexural strength, and flexural modulus.
