Cleaner oil with CJC™ Offline Oil Filters

Clean oil in the system reduces wear and tear on machines and
increases reliability of service, not to speak of the
environmental and financial benefits. Stenkoll takes a closer
look at offline filters.

Normally, oil is filtered inside the machines, regardless of whether we
are talking about crushers or wheel‐mounted loaders. The flow is
constantly high and, because of this, filtration is not always as efficient
as desired. And despite different kinds of seals, it is essentially
impossible to stop dust from entering systems. One solution is to
connect an offline oil filter, which, due to its significantly slower flow,
is very effective at cleaning the oil. This kind of oil filter works as a
separate 'kidney' which, in peace and quiet, ensures the best possible
quality of the vital oil.

There are many different filter solutions on the market: both
temporary extra filters, where you connect a removable offline filter
which purifies the oil tank during a specific time period – most
commonly 24 hours – and permanently connected filters which
continuously purify the oil in a machine with a heavy load. Stenkoll has
been talking to Sandvik, which since 2010 has offered permanent
offline filters as an optional extra for its cone crushers, and is planning   “When it comes to
to introduce the solution as standard.
  cone crushers, we
“Currently, the filter is available as an optional extra and as a 'retro-fit
kit' for our crushers,” says Sandvik’s Mr. Andreas Christoffersson, “The
recommend
reason we started offering this was because of an increased focus on  continuous filtration.”
reliability, environment and health. In addition, it brings down
operating costs.”  Mr. Andreas Christoffersson

Lower speed
He explains that although the crushers have an internal overpressure system, it is
difficult to avoid dust getting in, particularly in such a susceptible environment as the
extraction industry. Worn‐out dust and sluice seals, and manual handling of oil changes,
for example, let undesirable particles in. The oil flows at high speed through the
machine’s internal filter; the entire volume of the tank flows through in many cases in a
matter of minutes. An offline filter is not placed in the main flow, but normally processes
the machine’s oil in a couple of hours. The filtration is finer and the result is a
significantly cleaner oil.

“When it comes to cone crushers, we recommend continuous filtration,” says
Christoffersson.

According to Sandvik, there are several advantages of this type of filtration, including:
 Less wear on crusher and tank components
 Lower oil costs
 Less handling of oil, which brings both environmental and health benefits

Satisfied users
NCC’s Ramnaslätt plant near Borås is one of the extractors that use the system. Last
summer they installed an offline filter on the company’s H6000 tertiary cone crusher for
tests.
“Just looking at it, we can see a significant difference in the oil,” says product manager
Mr. Magnus Andersson, “We haven't yet had the results from the oil test we submitted,
but we're convinced they are going to show what we already think we know.”
He says that opening the crusher is enough to notice the benefits. “It's much cleaner
than before, with less dirt that wears down the machine. The oil temperature is also
lower and more even, because the coolers are not clogged with dirt. In the long term, the
operating costs are going to fall significantly.”

Five years without an oil change
The result meant that Ramnaslätt installed the filter on two more
crushers.
The benefits are being seen at Skanska too, in Önnestad near
Kristianstad, where five years ago a filter was installed on a Sandvik
CH440 with 400 litres of oil in the tank.
“We haven't changed the oil since then,” says Mr. Richard Svensson,
“And we haven't changed the filter inside the machine either.
Changing the offline filter every year has been sufficient.”
He also confirms that the crusher is cleaner inside since the
installation. “The lubrication oil doesn't get as warm as it used to,
and there's no water in the oil, which can cause problems with
condensation when it's cold outside.”

Svensson continues, “The investment cost has definitely been

covered. And I'm convinced that the wear and tear on the machine NCC’s plant in Ramnaslätt installed its first CJC™
Offline Oil Filter last summer and is very pleased
has fallen significantly.”
with its functioning

“At Sandvik, we've chosen to invest in a solution that is well-

established in the offshore and wind industries,” concludes Andreas Christoffersson, “It's
an extremely fine filtering technology that filters out water and oxidation residues as well
as particles. There are, of course, many offline solutions on the market, but I recommend
everyone, whatever brand you use, to take a closer look at this technology.”

FACTS

Offline Oil Filters can also be used alternately

on different machines in the same extraction.
The filter is of great benefit even if it only cleans
the oil once a week.
Equivalent filtration is also now available for
yellow gears and other crushers.
