Soxlhet Extraction

Materials and Equipments

 Hot Plate  (2) 500 mL Beaker  Wire Gauze


 Condenser  50 mL Beaker  Mortar and Pestle
 Extraction Chamber  250 mL Graduated  Wire Gauze
 500 ml Round Cylinder  (2) Clamps
Bottom Flask  Wash Bottle  Iron stand
 Erlenmeyer Flask  Stirring Rod  Filter Paper
 Rubber hose  Spatula  Ethyl Alcohol

Set up and Procedure

1. Prepare the leaves. Wash it with tap water then cut the leaves.
2. Grind the leaves with mortar and pestle until the leaves are finely crushed.
3. Place the filter paper inside the extraction chamber
4. Add 250 mL of ethanol to the 500 mL round bottom flask
5. Place the leaves in 6-10 filter papers
6. Prepare 1000 mL Beaker and fill it with 500 mL tap water and place it to a hotplate.
7. Place the filter paper inside the extraction chamber.
8. Place the soxlhet extraction set up on the water bath, which is to be boiled up to 40˚C
9. Let the process run for a total of 3 hours, occasionally replacing the ethanol in the 500 mL round
bottom flask to avoid it from running dry.
10. Observe the changes on the leaves and ethanol inside the soxlhet setup to know if there is a
leakage.
11. After 3 hours, turn off the hot plate then, let the extracted dye to cool down for about 5-10
mins.
