Fundamentals of Mechatronics and Robotics

MECHATRONICS- (MECHANISM + ELECTRONICS) These are electronic products developed by technology incorporate
more and more mechanism.

APPLICATION OF MECHATRONICS
1. OFFICE EQUIPMENT- examples are Scanner, printer, Fax machine and photocopier
2. MEDICAL FIELD- examples are 3D/4D ultrasound, X-ray machine, and CT Scan
3. MANUFACTURING COMPANY- examples are Microwave oven, Washing machine, and Vacuum cleaner.
4. DEFENSIVE SYSTEM- examples are Legged Squad Support System(LS3), and SWAT robot
5. AEROSPACE- examples are Communication satellite, and Space shuttle

ROBOTICS-Robotics is a part of mechatronics that deals with the study of technology associated with the design,
manufacturing, application and operation of robots.

Advantages of Robots
• Multi-tasking
• Re-programmable
• Quality
• Accident Reduction
• Low-capital vs human labor
• Works even in hazardous environment

Disadvantages of Robots
• Replacement for human labor
• Unemployment capacity
• Maintaining cost

TYPES OF ROBOTS

1. Manual Robots – These are robots that will not function unless controlled by humans.

2. Sequential Robots – These are robots that are designed to perform series of tasks in the same sequence and are
commonly programmed to loop.

3. Sensate Robots – A type of robot that will only be triggered when it senses something with its environment.

4. Smart Robots – These robots are considered to possess artificial intelligence; they can also control a fleet of
robots or robotic devices.

NXT LEGO MINDSTORM

It is programmable robotics toy released by LEGO Group, originating from the programmable sensor blocks used in
the line of educational toys. It comes in a kit containing many pieces which includes the controller, motor, sensors
and other components.

brain of the LEGO Mindstorm Education robot. It is a computer-controlled device that provides programmable,
intelligent and decision-making behavior.
PARTS:

SERVO MOTOR - The Servo Motor gives your robot the ability to move. It uses a built-in rotation sensor to
accurately control the motor’s output shaft. When programming a motor, you can use degrees or rotation to specify
a desired position. For example, you can specify a motor to rotate 90 degrees.

ULTASONIC SENSOR- The Ultrasonic Sensor can detect an object by determining the distance between the sensor
and the object, allowing your creations to “see”.

LIGHT/COLOR SENSOR- The Light/Color Sensor is capable of measuring light intensity. It determines the brightness
or darkness of its surrounding area and its surface, enabling it to identify different colors.
TOUCH SENSOR- The Touch Sensor has an orange tip known as a push button, which provides the touch feature.
When pressed, the push button moves backward into the sensor and sends signal to the NXT Controller.
