Name of Property: Levi Burton House
Location: Smithville Road

In 2011 the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, a part of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service,
purchased the property and dwelling on Smithville Road. Around this time USFWS demolished the
structure without coordination with the Trust and Section 106 review according to a 06/21/2012
submittal for a new undertaking pertaining to a timber sale on the property, log number 201203301 .

DESCRIBE THE PRESENT# •D ORIGINAL (If lm6Wtt) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE

It is a one and one-half story frame building with

6/9 sash on the first story windows and 2/2 sash in the
dor·mers. It's typical for the second quarter 19th century
in having the chimneys on the exterior of the gables and
the chimney caps built like a funnel. To the rear of the
main structure is a wing without dormers. The entire struc-
ture is covered with wide siding and galvanized tin roof-
ing. A screened porch is located between two windows of
the facade. Like the majority of structures in Dorchester,
the house is built on brick piers with boards between to
retard the drafts.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

The Levi Burton House is so named because of the pre-

sence of a gravestone bearing his name sitting in the front
yard of the house. In form, it is similar to the Mills
z Farmhouse near Madison and in detail, is more like the
0 E.C. Flynn house also near Madison.
- It is a good example of the ''T'' plan in Dorchester
County vernacular structures.
