Role of Nurses in Ameliorating the Health Status of a

Community through Addressing Domestic Violence

Domestic violence occurs between people who are, or were formerly, in an intimate
relationship on a continuum of economic, psychological and emotional abuse, through to
physical and sexual violence. Nurses have a central agenda of caring, early intervention, and
health promotion in order to improve the health status of clients, but most have been reluctant to
consider domestic violence as a health issue, preferring instead to consider it to be the domain of
social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists. Despite this nurses still have a significant role in
assisting women, and children, and anyone who are victims of domestic abuse, in order to
promote a healthy and harmonious environment that will ameliorate the health status of a
community.
