CERTIFICATE
This is to certify that YOGESH BHUTKAR of
class XII has prepared the investigatory
project entitled: EDDY CURRENT IN
ELECTROMAGNETIC DAMPING.

This report is the result of his efforts and

endeavors and with the guidance of Mrs. P.
Madhavi.

The report is found worthy of acceptance as

final project report for physics examinations
of class XII conducted by CBSE for the
academic year 2019-20.

OBJECTIVE:

The goal of this project is

application of Eddy Current
in Electromagnetic damping.
MATERIALS AND
EQUIPMENTS

To do this experiment you will need

the following materials and equipm-
ents:

1.Two hollow cylindrical pipes.

2.Aluminium and PVC pipes.

3.Clamps.

4.Retort stands.

5.Small cylindrical magnets.

PRINCIPLE
Electromagnetic Damping:-

Electromagnetic damping in Galvano-

metres helps to reduce oscillations
around equilibrium positions.
Theory
Electromagnetic Damping:

Certain galvanometers have a fixed core of

nonmagnetic material. When the coil
oscillates, the eddy currents generated in
the core opposes the motion and bring the
coil to rest quickly.
WORKING

Take two hollow thin cylindrical pipes of

equal internal diameters made of
aluminium and PVC , respectively. Fix
them vertically with clamps on retort
stands . Take a small cylindrical magnet
having diameter slightly smaller than the
inner diameter of the pipes and drop it
through each pipe in such a way that the
magnet does not touch the sides of the
pipes during its fall.
OBSERVATIONS
You will observe that the magnet dropped
through the PVC pipe takes the same time
to come out of the pipe as it would take
when dropped through the same height
without the pipe. Note the time it takes to
come out of the pipe in each case. You will
see that the magnet takes much longer time
in the case of aluminium pipe. Because it is
due to the eddy currents that are generated
in the aluminium pipe which oppose the
change in magnetic flux, that is , the motion
of the magnet. The retarding force due to
the eddy currents inhibits the motion of the
magnets. Such phenomenon are referred to
as electric damping.
Acknowledgement
I would like to express a deep sense of thanks
and gratitude to my project guide Mrs.P.Madhavi
ma’am for guiding me immensely through the
course of the project. He always evinced keen
intreast in my work. His constructive advice and
constant motivation have been responsible for
the successful completion of this project.

My sincere thanks to our principal sir

Mr.Joshua Hasting for his co-ordination in
extending every possible support.

I also like to
thank to my lab assistant, Mr.Narsimha for his
support in lab during practical.
