Commonalities
1. Technical skills:
All three job descriptions required almost similar technical skills. These skills are:
Knowledge of MS office tools including Visio / PPT / Word / Excel
Basic knowledge of Operating Systems, Database, Database Query, Data
Modeling, Process Modeling
Able to capture experiences in form of documents or case studies
Programming skills
2. Non-Technical Skills:
Other than the technical skills required, there are various other skills demanded like
communications skills, leadership skills etc. The common non-technical skills in these
job descriptions are:
Good communication skills
Strong interpersonal skills
Good analytical skills
Customer management skills
Ready to travel frequently
Leadership skills
We could observe all these commonalities in these job descriptions because of the nature of
the job.
Since all three companies are into IT industry, some common technical skills have to
be there for similar profile in any company
The role is of a “Senior Consultant” which needs a lot of interaction with customers,
thus skills like good communication, customer management, ability to travel
frequently etc. are found common to all the three jobs profiles
As the profiles are for senior level, every company expects their employee at these
level to have the ability to lead others and make others learn from her experiences
The role of consultant also demand some common level of technical and analytical
aptitude, which is again common to all these job descriptions
Differences
Many differences can be spotted in all three job descriptions, even though they all are related
similar profiles in same industry but in different companies. These differences are enlisted
below:
Technical Skills: Although we saw lot of commonalities in the technical skills in all
three profiles but still every company has some differences as well. Based on the
technology used in each company the required technical skills vary
Degree and Work Experience: Also we can observe that although all three companies
are from same industry and these job descriptions are for similar profile but there is a
slight difference in the educational degrees and work experience demanded for
each profile. For instance, all three require bachelor’s degree in engineering (IT) but
Wipro gives preference to MBA degree holders and Informatica also allows MCA
candidates to apply.
Talking about work experience, where Wipro demands 2+ years of prior work
experience and Citrix requires 1-3 years of experience, Informatica on the other hand
has a requirement of 7 to 15 years of prior work experience for same profile. This
implies although job title may be same for all three there may be a difference in seniority
levels of each profile in respective companies.
Non-Technical skills: The biggest difference in non-technical skills can be seen from
the job description of Citrix and other two companies. Citrix mentions following
leadership competencies requirement in its job description:
As is clear from these requirements Citrix has a special focus on personal skill
competencies of the applicant. Most of these competencies are related to leadership
abilities of the applicant, which according to Citrix are must for this profile. Although
Wipro and Informatica also have leadership abilities as one of their criteria but they are
not as explicit as Citrix is.
Similarly Wipro also mentions behavioural core competencies it desires from the
applicants for this profile. Other two job descriptions do not give focus to behavioural
aspects as Wipro does. This implies the significance Wipro lays on the behaviour of is
employees.
Another difference observed is again from the Citrix job description. In the job description
by Citrix they explicitly mention the functional competencies. These functional
competencies may have some commonalities with other two job descriptions but giving a
specific mention to them signifies how much importance Citrix gives to these competencies
while selecting a candidate
Another significant difference can be seen in the JD of Informatica, as they have some
different demand related to personal skills of a candidate. They want the candidate to
possess sensitivity, responsiveness, and the will to grow. These trait requirements are
missing from other two JDs, perhaps it is the work culture of Informatica that is being
enforced here through these requirements
Another important difference observed is again in Citrix’s JD. They lay a specific focus
on the requirement to think as “Us” or “We” and not as “I” or “You”. This again shows
the significance of team skills in candidates for Citrix.
