"Don't ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody." - J.D Salinger
This is a quote that I can relate to personally, because in essence, it means that you
start to miss people that you get close to. My theme sense of self is related to this since it's
talking about the things that make someone start to feel emotions, and comparing their lives to
the impact by others. When you get close to people, you choose to tell them personal things. In
the book, Holden told his life story pretty much to everyone that he met and saw in the duration
of the book. I feel like I start to miss people in a way that gets me mad for becoming friends with
them. This is because of the fact that I have had some friends that I told secrets to that I regret
telling, because they just take it for advantage and disregard the friendship but, you still miss
them.
In the book, Holden is an obviously depressed kid, which is something that I do NOT
share with that character. This is because I consider myself to be better than I am so, I don't
normally feel depressed from a friend leaving. It does still hurt though, damage it done but,
Holden takes it to a whole other level, where he'd drink or smoke, and he gets himself into a
position where he meets someone new, tells them a lot of secrets, and when they leave, he gets
were so important that they should grieve over it, which is why my theme relates to this quote.
There's another quote from the same book, "I knew it wasn't too important, but it made me sad
anyway". I think that some people's sense of self is dependent on other people, even though if
they know better. Which is something that sucks too because of the fact that they know better
but, it's the heart that messes with the mind and just tells it to feel emotional pain.
