ANTICONVULSANT AGENTS

DEFINITION- Anticonvulsants are the drugs which are used in the


prevention and control of epilepsy.

 They are a diverse group of pharmaceuticals used in the


treatment of epileptic seizures and in the treatment of bipolar
disorder
 They are used to act as mood stabilizers and for the treatment
of neuropathic pain.
 Anticonvulsant suppress the rapid and excessive firing of
neurons that start a seizure.

EPILEPSY- Epilepsy is a syndrome of different cerebral disorders


characterised by paroxysmal, excessive ands hypersynchronous
discharge of neurons in different parts of the brain.Epileptic episodes
are called seizures.

2.Hydantoins Phenytoin, mephenytoin

3.oxazolidinediones Trimethadione , paramethadione
4.Succimides Phensuximide, methsuximide

5.Ureas and monoacyl-ureas Phenacemide, carbamazepine
6.Benzodiazepines Clonazepam , diazepam,
chlorazapate
7.Miscellaneous Primidone ,valproic acid
,gabapentin, lamotrigene
Felbamate.
