COFFEE SAMPLE DIVIDERS
DELUXE COPPER & BRASS BOERNER DIVIDER
ISO 9001 CERTIFIED

Boerner dividers utilize alternating ducts and spaces to divide a sample while
maintaining the representativeness of each portion.

Dividers are used to proportionately reduce large samples of grain, rice, beans, peas, and lentils to
smaller representative portions to facilitate their inspection. For official purposes, only use dividers
that are (l) a type and model approved by FGIS, and (2) maintained in good operating condition.
Divider discharge quantities should be adjusted as necessary, to meet the manufacturers’ designated
target weights. There is no requirement to “test” the dividers, since there is little evidence that small
deviation from target weights will affect the percentage of various components in the sample.
Adjustment of quantities is for convenience of use.

SINAR
TECHNOLOGY

The Sinar Technology DryPro

`In dryer or silo moisture monitoring and control - preventing the
problems of over & under drying in green and roasted coffee.

The Sinar DryPro heralds a breakthrough in crop moisture control, providing real
time moisture content & temperature readings, which allows fine-tuning of the
dryer to maximize throughput and minimize fuel wastage.

Manual sampling of the crop as it exits the dryer is time consuming, and relies on
small samples to represent the moisture content of the grain remaining in the
dryer. Also, you are always looking back at what has already happened inside
your drier, making fine control of the drier a matter of trial and error.

The Sinar DryPro, based on proven capacitance technology, continually reads

the moisture of the grain as it passes the sensors positioned throughout the
dryer. This gives you real-time moisture and temperature readings as the grain is
still in the drier, allowing much tighter control of your drying operation.

By taking hundreds of readings per hour the Sinar DryPro gives you the data to
make the correct drier management decisions. Alternatively, using the optional
analogue outputs, let the Sinar DryPro make the adjustments for you.

Easily installed into existing dryers, the Sinar DryPro can be configured to trigger
high and/or low moisture alarms, continually log moisture and temperature
results and provide a variety of outputs which can be used to monitor or directly
control the drier.

The Sinar DryPro also uses the same standard calibrations developed for use in
the Sinar Technology’s range of hand held moisture analyzers. This gives the
system great flexibility as it can be calibrated for any of the hundreds of
commodities listed in our calibration library, as well as allowing easy checking
and adjustment.

MEASURING COFFEE GRINDS WITH SIEVE ANALYSIS

Sieve analysis is an inexpensive, direct method for measuring the size of powders and granular materials. It's also
usually the first method empoyed, when a company is trying to get a handle on how particle size analysis affects their
finished product.

too big to pass.
There are a number of different types of sieve agitators. Most of the original research relative to coffee grind analysis in
the 1950's, was carried out, using ROTAP (Short for rotating tapping) Sieve Shakers, which were designed to provide
results similar to hand agitation, the original direct method for conducting a sieve test. ROTAP Sieve Shakers, because
of their design, are somewhat noisy, and require an isolation cabinet, or separate room, for hearing safety. Now there
are a number of alternative methods available for effective sieve agitation.

MEASURING COFFEE GRINDS WITH SIEVE ANALYSIS

Sieves are manufactured with precise tolerances in the wire mesh, to ensure
the retained particles are representative of the sieve aperture size.

There are different degrees of specification compliance.

COMPLIANCE LEVEL
INSPECTION LEVEL
CALIBRATION LEVEL

The higher the level of compliance, the more apertures are inspected.

In order to ensure the sieves are still in compliance, they need to be

inspected / calibrated, on a regular basis.

RECOMMENDED SIEVE RECERTIFICATION SCHEDULE

Aperture Schedule

5 inches to .25 inches 80 uses or 36 months

US No. 1/2 to US No. 12 70 uses or 30 months
US No. 14 to US No. 40 60 uses or 24 months
US No. 45 to US No. 140 50 uses or 18 months
US No. 170 to US No. 325 35 uses or 12 months
US No. 400 to US No. 635 20 uses or 6 months

Besides cleaning sieves regularly, with either a small brush, or preferably, with the help of a sonic sifter, they
must be inspected on occassion, to verify the sieves are still in in compliance.

Sieves are calibrated, either by third party verification, which can get
very expensive, or in house by a variety of methods.

Sieve calibration beads usually

come with 5 single shot bottles
of soda lime glass microspheres,
that are designed to be retained
by specific apertures, in order to
verify the sieve is still in spec.

ULTRASONIC CLEANERS CLEAN SIEVES

EFFECTIVELY WITTHOUT DAMAGING THEM

Another method often used for calibrating test

sieves, is to maintain a stack of calibration sieves,
where through performance testing, the results are
compared to the working sieves (Sieves used for
testing).

A caliper may also be employed to manually measure

sieve apertures, and compare to the standards
employed. (cont)

PARTICLE SIZE ANALYSIS IN COFFEE GRINDS “Comparing the accuracy of existing methods”
Why is particle size so important as it relates to ground coffee?

Simply put, smaller particles provide more exposed surface area. The more exposed surface area you have, the less time it takes for water to
contact it, and extract the right amount of coffee solubles. If you put Turkish Coffee in a drip coffee maker, you’ll see what happens. The same is
true with tea. Anyone that has left a tea bag in too long, can attest to the bitter result.

If you’re a big commercial facility, grinding large volumes of coffee, eventually your grinder is going to require maintenance. To gauge grinder
performance, frequent particle size analysis tests are required. A shift in the particle size distribution of the coffee grinds, signals a problem.
When a problem arises, it is important to catch it quickly, for obvious reasons.

Three common methods of determining particle size, are generally employed in the coffee industry:
SIEVE ANALYSIS‐ Assumes particles are round (DIRECT METHOD NIST TRACEABLE)
LASER DIFFRACTION‐Assumes particles are round
DIGITAL IMAGE ANALYSIS‐Captures images and shape of particles (DIRECT METHOD NIST TRACEABLE)

With perfectly round particles, all three methods will be in alignment. However, with non‐spherical particles like coffee grinds, the similarities
diminish quickly.

These Espresso Particles are far from round. Laser diffraction will measure the
angular variation in intensity of scattered light, as a laser beam passes through a
dispersed particulate sample, giving a fairly robust measure of surface area. The
method. However, when compared with direct measurement methods, like
digital image analysis, laser diffraction results for plates can be 31% off, and
rods up to 70% wrong.
Espresso Images captured

Part Syst Charact, 11:121‐126, 1994

Using sieves for sizing non‐spherical particles, has its’ own set of complications.
Because the widest part of a particles width, is the dimension that determines
what sized sieve aperture, it will be retained by, the results will not correlate
Occhio Virtual Discs used to  with actual surface area, very well.
calculate sieve correlation  High resolution digital imaging, however, has the ability, to provide
measurement data, that correlates with either method.

To correlate with laser diffraction, a digital image analyzer instead of
measuring diffraction, eliminates diffraction, and captures actual images of the
particles. Occhio uses more advanced geometric algorithms, but it can be as
simple as counting pixels, to establish a surface area measurement, because we
know the microns per pixel rating of the lens.

To correlate with sieve analysis, OCCHIO employs a virtual disc to help
ascertain the dimension of the particle that would be retained in a sieve. Slight
OCCHIO COFFEE‐TRAK  differences will result, because some particle fall through a sieve on the
aperture diagonal, but this can be accounted for with the OCCHIO Size & Shape

Principle

Definition of tapped density is an increased bulk density attained after

mechanically tapping a container containing the powder sample. Tapped
density is obtained by mechanically tapping a graduated measuring
cylinder or vessel containing a powder sample. After observing the initial
powder volume or weight, the apparatus measuring cylinder or vessel is
mechanically tapped, and volume or weight readings are taken until little
further volume or weight change is observed. The mechanical tapping is
achieved by raising the cylinder or vessel and allowing it to drop under its
own weight a specified distance by either of three methods as during
tapping may be preferred to minimize any possible separation of the mass
during tapping down. This parameter is very important in packing the
material. During tapping of the sample, the smaller particles try to fit
themselves in gaps of the larger particles and hence the total volume of the
powder reduces.
