CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter includes the introduction, theoretical background, statement of


the problem, hypothesis, scope and limitation ,significance of the study and the
definition of the terms used.

RATIONALE

Peer pressure is often seen in teenagers because they often seek comfort
among their peers and intend to do what their peer does without knowing if it is
good or bad for them. Human development is affected by its socialization with
other people in the environment. Specifically the academic achievements of
students are conjectures to be correctional by the support given by the parents,
teachers, and the peer of teenagers that affect their level of academic
performance. Peer pressure often seems to have a various effect towards the
student academic performance in school.

Most young people spend more time with their peers, that is why they are
constantly influenced by them. However, when it comes to decision making, it is
all up to the teens what to do and not to do. Peer pressure is a part of human
nature and it is one thing that all teens have in common. Students need to
critically think about this and be guided when dealing with peer pressure.

Studies show that the influence of peer groups among student can boost their
anxiety especially pertaining to their education(Lucy Perrone & Staff writer
2017).The relationship within the group with its peers are co-related with each
other,hence the direction of this particular relationship should be monitored were
these relationships should go considering all possible factors correlated within
the groups outcome(Jamaal Abdul-Alim,2014).

Peer pressure faced by many teenagers of the society,professionals


understood the concept of peer influence that could affect them in a negative
way which can be prevented by educating and preparing teenagers to face the
negative aspects caused by peer pressure(Mascardo et.al,2013).This study may
help us in guiding students with right path.This paper focuses on the students
perception on peer pressure in the academe.

The goal of this research is to give our respondents or readers a moral lesson
about peer pressure in academic performance that not just by having many
peers to be good in a academic but can be better in academic individually.Telling
students that they will be learning what peer pressure is and differing its positive
and negative outcomes.Brieftly share prior knowledge.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The main purpose of the study is to know how peer pressure affects the
academic performance of the students.Specifically,it will answer these
questions:

1.What are the students' views on peer pressure in the academe?

2.How does peer pressure affect students' academic performance?

3.What are the perceived advantages and disadvantages of peer pressure in the
academe?

4.How does peer pressure affect the students behavior in school?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Peer pressure has become a big part of teenagers' lives.Whether they are at
school.Peer pressure can affect their academic perofrmance and even the
impact that their general outlook especially in school.The importance of this
research is to know about the perception of each students in University of Cebu
Pri about the peer pressure.This study will be beneficial to the following:

Students-this study will help them to reflect on their actions and amend their
ways to become a better individual.

Teachers-teachers who are still newbie in the teaching profession can gain
beneficial in this study.For them to assess the needs of the students in their
academic perfomance and behavior on how to deal with them.

Parents-this research benefits the parents.Parents will able to know their


childrens' profile on their academic performance.Also to establish a strong
communication with their children in order to guide them.

School Administrator-they will be gaining information to guide and to help the


teachers in guiding the students towards peer pressure.

Principal-it benefits for the principal so that the he/she will determine the
perception of every students and able to know on how to guide them.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study focuses on students' perceptions on peer pressure in the


academe.Peer pressure have been considered as one of the most major
problem of the society today.This study will not discuss other matters which do
not fall in the students' perceptions on peer pressure in the academe.This study
is limited to ten students,five female and five male in Senior high school
students in grade eleven HUMSS(Humanities and Social Sciences) strand in
University of Cebu-Pri Campus of the school year 2019-2020.
