ABSTRACT:

This thesis project is about thinking space in relation to smells. Odor play a
critical role in connecting us with the surroundings. Humans are capable of
distinguishing millions of different smells through smell receptors in the nose
alone. Thus, this thesis purpose includes the sense of smell in its spatial design
process.

The repository of scent seeks to reify and blend the Indian perfume culture
and international fragrance products through an experience museum and
manufacturing area. The museum acts as a place for the collection of
fragrances, experiences the lingering fragrances and witness it being made in
the factory.

NEED:
The purpose of this study was to describe the phenomena of using
scented or aromatic materials to engage the visitor’s sense of smell in museum
setting. The museum provides a very detailed insight into the production
methods of perfume throughout the various stages. Smells do bring back
memories. scents serve to recall memories, create moods of comfort or unease
and stimulate conversation.
Museums are immersive venues that create a window into another place
and time. While all senses should be harnessed to create that exclusive
museum experience, fragrance stands out alone when it comes to its power to
alter mood and perception in a way that other accoutrements, such as lighting,
sound, simply cannot do.
