Lesson Plan

Grade/Subject: Grade 6 Social Studies Unit: Local Government Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES
General Learning Outcomes:
Students will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the dynamic relationship
between governments and citizens as they engage in the democratic process.

Specific Learning Outcomes: Students will:

6.1.4 Analyze the structure and functions of local governments in Alberta by exploring and
reflecting upon the following questions and issues:
• How are representatives chosen to form a local government (i.e., electoral process)?

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Know the Blood tribe electoral process.
Skill:
Students will be able to explain how Chief and council are elected.

Observations: Key Questions:
Observing students during discussion. How are Chief & Council elected?
Asking for thumbs up if understanding.
Written/Performance Assessments:
Students will run a mock election

PROCEDURE
Introduction (2 min.):
Good morning students, yesterday I told you that we were going to do a mock election today. We will get started with
a review of the election process, and then we will start with our own mock election.
Body (40 min.):
Activity #1: Review election process. 10min
Activity #2: Run Mini election. 30min
Students will nominate 2 candidates.
Candidates will be given a few minutes to prepare their speeches.
Students will vote.
Closure (3 min.):
Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: Observation of students during discussions,
Feedback From Students: ask students for feedback on what they learned.
Feedback To Students: Class I really appreciate your participation in class today, you have all been really good
students, and I look forward to our next lesson.
