A History of Fantasy Illustration of the
exhibition
Edited by Jesse Kowalski

The first-ever history of fantasy art and illustration

For hundreds of years, artists have been inspired by the

imaginative potential of fantasy. Unlike science fiction,
which is based on fact, fantasy presents an impossible
reality—a universe where dragons breathe fire, angels battle
demons, and magicians weave spells. Published to coincide
with a major exhibition organized by the Norman Rockwell
Museum, this handsome volume reveals how artists have
brought to life mythology, fables, and fairy tales, as well as
modern epics like the Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones.
Written by leading authorities—including art historian
Alice A. Carter and illustator Gregory Manchess—Enchanted
traces the development of fantasy art from Old Masters
like Rembrandt and Henry Fuseli, through Golden Age
illustrators like Arthur Rackham and Howard Pyle, to classic
cover artists like Frank Frazetta and Boris Vallejo, and
emerging talents like Anna Dittmann and Heather Edwards.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
and Huckleberry Finn
By Mark Twain
Illustrated by Norman Rockwell

A great American novelist, illustrated by a great

American artist—now available in a collectible two-
volume set

In 1936, the Heritage Press, a publisher of fine editions,

commissioned Norman Rockwell to illustrate Mark Twain’s
Adventures of Tom Sawyer; four years later, they asked him
to illustrate The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as well. For
each book, Rockwell created eight full-color paintings and
numerous pen-and-ink drawings, the product of extensive
on-the-ground research in Twain’s hometown of Hannibal,
Missouri. Famously, Rockwell even tried to buy some
Hannibal residents’ old clothes to dress his models in.
For years, the Rockwell editions of Tom Sawyer and
Huckleberry Finn have been unavailable in stores. Now
Abbeville Press is proud to reissue them as a handsome
new clothbound set. The color plates are reproduced
from new photography of Rockwell’s original paintings, the
typesetting has been done anew to a high standard, and
new introductions—illustrated with Rockwell’s rarely seen
preliminary sketches—examine this unique encounter
between two legendary chroniclers of America.

Santorini
Portrait of a Vanished Era
By Robert A. McCabe and Margarita Pournara

Beautiful black-and-white photographs of Santorini

taken between 1954 and 1964—depicting idyllic
landscapes and traditional island culture

Today Santorini is visited by some 2.5 million people a year.

But when Robert McCabe and his brother arrived there
in 1954, they were the only visitors on the island. In this
collection of stunning photographs from the 1950s and
1960s—reproduced as tritones of surpassing quality—
McCabe has recorded the hardscrabble, yet often romantic,
life of a vanished era. Picturesque whitewashed houses dug
into the volcanic pumice; the harvest of the island’s famous
cherry tomatoes; the winding road to the ruins of ancient
Thera—all this was captured by his lens.
McCabe’s photographs are complemented by two essays
from the noted Greek journalist Margarita Pournara, one
poetically evoking her grandmother’s childhood on Santorini
and the other explaining the geological forces that have given
this volcanic island its dramatic form.
A companion to McCabe’s recent volume on Mykonos, this
book will fascinate modern-day visitors to Santorini, as well as
those who trace their roots to the Greek islands.

Robert A. McCabe was born in Chicago in 1934. He has

Autograph Album
By Theodore Dawes

Publisher's note: The below description was written before the

author submitted his final manuscript. We now believe this book
to be some species of literary hoax.

A new masterpiece of social history, uncovering the

interconnected lives of those who signed a young girl's
autograph album 130 years ago

Like many middle-class Boston girls of the late nineteenth

century, Annie McFarlane kept an autograph album, in which
her schoolmates, family, and neighbors wrote messages of
friendship and scraps of sentimental verse. This keepsake,
with its stamped and colored binding, was passed down
through McFarlane’s family to her great-grandson, the
independent scholar Theodore Dawes. Fascinated by the
faded inscriptions in so many varied hands—from the spiky
script of Andrew McFarlane (“Father”) to the labored cursive
of young Flossie L. Law—Dawes undertook an arduous
course of archival research aimed at uncovering the identity
and biographical details of everyone who signed the album.
Distributed for Laboratory Books The result is this book, in which each page of Annie
and the New American Society for McFarlane’s autograph album is reproduced in facsimile,

metropolis—as illustrated by some 250 diverse items from
the incomparable collections of the Museum of the City of
New York. These include paintings, photographs, drawings,
manuscripts, decorative arts and fashion, and unique artifacts
such as a lock of George Washington’s hair, “Boss” Tweed’s

An insightful text places these objects in their historical
context and relates them to the broader forces that have
shaped New York into a world city. This little book is a perfect
gift for first-time visitors and lifelong New Yorkers alike.

400 Years of American Elections
By Alan Axelrod

A fun and informative visual history—and a reminder to

do your civic duty!

This little volume is a visual history of U.S. electoral politics,

starting with the earliest representative assemblies in the
American colonies and concluding with the 2018 midterms
that brought us AOC and the Squad. Through paintings,
prints, photographs, and artifacts (including some amusing
campaign buttons), it traces the evolution of our unique
political culture and the gradual (still ongoing) extension of
the franchise to all U.S. citizens eighteen and older. It is the
perfect gift for the voters in your life.

Alan Axelrod, PhD, is the author of numerous books about

Fifth Edition
More than
A World History of Photography one million
copies in print
By Naomi Rosenblum
With contributions by Diana Stoll

An up-to-date edition of the definitive history of

photography—a best seller for thirty-five years

Naomi Rosenblum’s classic history of photography traces

the evolution of this young art form chronologically and
thematically. Rosenblum traces the diverse roles that the
camera has played in the communication of ideas—in
portraiture, documentation, advertising, photojournalism,
and personal artistic expression. Her text is illustrated with
nearly nine hundred images by photographers both celebrated
and little known, arranged in stimulating juxtapositions that
illuminate their visual power.
This fifth edition of A World History of Photography is
substantively revised and updated. The photography of the
later twentieth century is reevaluated from a contemporary—
and more global—perspective. And the complex landscape of
twenty-first-century photography is masterfully surveyed, with
particular attention to the role of digital technologies in creating
and disseminating images.
Thoughtfully written, carefully and abundantly illustrated,
and provided with a full apparatus—including a chronology,
glossary, and annotated bibliography—Rosenblum’s volume

The Pre-Raphaelites
By Aurélie Petiot

A magnificent new book on the Pre-Raphaelites—

oversized, gorgeously illustrated, and packed with insight

Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais, and William

Holman Hunt. These were among the young British artists
who, in the revolutionary year of 1848, set out to return a lost
vibrancy to European art. Calling themselves the Pre-Raphaelite
Brotherhood, they and their later followers—including Edward
Burne-Jones and William Morris—rebelled against the
constraints of the Victorian art world and the dehumanizing
aspects of the industrial age. They treated poetry and fable,
religion and contemporary life, with the same luminous colors
and carefully limned detail.
Here art historian Aurélie Petiot traces Pre-Raphaelitism
from its beginnings as a secret brotherhood to its dissemination
in multiple strands of painting, drawing, and decorative art.
She gives particular attention to the role of women in the
movement, not only as models and muses, but as pioneering
artists in their own right. Uniquely, she devotes her last chapters

One Hundred Aspects of the Moon
By John Stevenson

A beautiful facsimile edition of the final masterpiece

of ukiyo-e—strictly limited to 3,000 numbered copies

Yoshitoshi (1839–1892) was the last virtuoso of the Japanese

woodblock print, and the One Hundred Aspects of the
Moon, published between 1885 and 1892, were his crowning
achievement. This series—illustrating scenes from history,
legend, and contemporary life, unified by the motif of the
moon—abounds with stylistic innovations, drawn from
Western art and the artist’s own fertile imagination. Even
as traditional woodblock prints were being supplanted by
mass media like lithography, an eager public snapped up
Yoshitoshi’s images, many of which were sold out on the
morning of their publication.
This magnificent facsimile of One Hundred Aspects of
the Moon reproduces each print at its original size, facing
an explanation of the subject. A thorough introductory text,
augmented with many comparative illustrations, traces
Yoshitoshi’s turbulent career and the genesis of this series.
Printed and bound to the most exacting specifications, this
volume will be a must for aficionados of Japanese prints.

Ronald Bladen
Sculpture
By Robert S. Mattison
Foreword by Mark di Suvero

The first monograph on a pivotal figure of postwar

American art

Ronald Bladen (1918–1988) was regarded as an artistic

forerunner by Minimalists like Donald Judd, Sol Lewitt, and Carl
Andre. But in contrast to the matter-of-fact work of these artists,
Bladen’s sculptures are charged with emotional power. They
fill entire rooms, pressing outward against the walls and ceiling;
their themes include the force of gravity, the dynamism of planar
surfaces, the impact of scale, and confrontation with the viewer.
This splendidly illustrated book presents a comprehensive
overview of Bladen’s career: his breakthrough sculptures such
as Three Elements (1965), a standout at the Jewish Museum’s
legendary Primary Structures exhibition; his monumental
outdoor commissions of the late 1960s through the 1980s;
and his reflective wall reliefs of the 1980s. Bladen’s working
models and drawings are examined in detail, and his early career
as a painter is considered in the light of his later work. Also
included are selections from the critical literature on Bladen, and
an illustrated chronology of his life and work.
Ronald Bladen: Sculpture is an essential volume on an artist
who continues to influence sculptors from Richard Serra to
Ursula von Rydingsvard.

Zen in Japanese Culture
By Gavin Blair

A visual journey through Zen’s influence on Japanese

life, from calligraphy to the martial arts

Formed by a convergence of the Buddha’s teachings with

Taoism and local tradition, Zen has had a profound impact on
the art and culture of Japan. As a philosophy, Zen promotes a
recognition of emptiness and impermanence. As an aesthetic,
it is marked by striking simplicity and a reverence for space. It
operates on the principle of wabi-sabi, the harmony found in
all things transient and imperfect. Countless Japanese artists,
artisans, and designers have engaged with the Zen tradition,
their work the fruit of its wisdom.
Author Gavin Blair has spent nearly two decades as a writer
and journalist in Japan. In these pages, he shows how Zen
has found expression in all aspects of Japanese culture, be
it the tea ceremony, origami, or bonsai. Gorgeous full-color
photographs highlight the simple beauty of the Zen aesthetic,
from the hanging noren (curtains) that adorn entrances and
doorways, to the intricate craftwork of a wagasa (umbrella).
Together these images speak to the quiet power of Zen.
“Beautifully detailed and illustrated” Above all, Zen is an invitation to contemplate the
—Foreword Reviews mind, to cultivate harmony with nature and ease through
understanding. This book is for any reader who is curious
about Japanese culture and the Zen tradition.

Patterns in Art
A Closer Look at the Old Masters
By Francesca Leoneschi,
with illustrations by Giovanna Ferraris and text by Silvia Lazzaris

A visual delight, and a designer’s dream—the decorative

details of paintings from European and American
museums transformed into beautiful two-dimensional
patterns

“The authors take the best ornamental details of the Old Masters
and magically transform them into patterns that are—if this is
imaginable—even better than the reference! A must for designers
of all disciplines.”
—Louise Fili, designer and author

“The Old Master paintings in The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s
collection are profound manifestations of human culture and
aesthetics, and this book is a beautiful testament to their eternal
ability to inspire creative endeavors that generate impressive results.”
—Max Hollein, director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art

“This book rethinks the traditional approach to works of art in
a novel way: through a sophisticated operation of extraction,
it plucks out fragments of memory and recomposes them in a
new graphic narration. In this way, it reinvents the destiny of art
through a form of contemporary rewriting that opens the doors to
unexpected and surprising future interpretations.”

Women of the 1920s
Style, Glamour, and the Avant-Garde
By Thomas Bleitner

Experience the glamor and excitement of the Jazz Age,

through the lives of the women who defined it

It was a time of unimagined new freedoms. From the cafés of

Paris to Hollywood’s silver screen, women were exploring new
modes of expression and new lifestyles. In countless aspects of
life, they dared to challenge accepted notions of a “fairer sex,”
and opened new doors for the generations to come. What’s
more, they did it with joy, humor, and unapologetic charm.
Exploring the lives of seventeen artists, writers, designers,
dancers, adventurers, and athletes, this splendidly illustrated
book brings together dozens of photographs with an engaging
text. In these pages, readers will meet iconoclastic women
whose stories continue to offer inspiration for our time—such
as the lively satirist Dorothy Parker, the avant-garde muse
and artist Kiki de Montparnasse, and aviation pioneer Amelia
Earhart. Women of the 1920s is a daring and stylish addition to
any bookshelf of women’s history.

Hamburg, Germany.

Greek and Roman Mosaics Back in stock

By Umberto Pappalardo and Rosario Ciardiello
Photographs by Luciano Pedicini

The best-illustrated survey of a spectacular ancient art,

now available in an affordable edition

Mosaic has been called “painting for eternity,” and it is one

of the few arts of antiquity to survive in nearly its original
condition and variety. In the first part of this handsome
volume, the styles and techniques of the ancient mosaicist’s
art are given a concise yet authoritative exposition.
The second, and larger, part conducts the reader on a
chronologically ordered tour of the most important centers
of the art form’s development, from the Macedonian capital
of Pella to the Basilica of San Vitale at Ravenna. Special
attention is given to Pompeii and its surroundings, where
the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 preserved intact
an astonishing variety of mosaics, including such ambitious
figural scenes as the famous Alexander Mosaic, composed of
some four million miniscule tesserae.
Featuring more than 230 vibrant photographs, many newly
commissioned, Greek and Roman Mosaics is the first survey of
its subject to be illustrated in full color. It will be an essential
visual reference for every student of classical antiquity, and a
source of considerable delight for art lovers.

The Last Monk of the Strofades
Memories from an Unknown Greek Island
By Robert A. McCabe and Katerina Lymperopoulou

The story, in photographs, of the last caretaker of an

ancient island monastery—an architectural and historical
treasure now in danger of destruction

The Strofades: two small, windswept islands rising out of the

Ionian Sea. On the larger of the two islets, Stamfani, stands a
massive fortified monastery, founded as early as the thirteenth
century, for centuries a refuge for honest seafarers and a target
for pirates. In its heyday, this imposing compound was home
to some forty farmer-monks; by 1976, it was home to just one,
Father Gregory Kladis (1937–2017), who alone tended the
monastery until 2014. Today the monastery—badly damaged by
an earthquake in 1997—lies empty and in danger of ruin.
This book is intended to tell the world about the Holy
Monastery at Strofades, and encourage its preservation. At its
core are the words of the last monk himself, Father Gregory, who
guides the reader through his historic monastery and the natural
beauties of its island setting, as depicted in Robert McCabe’s
superb photographs. The testimonies of the boatman who
brought Father Gregory his supplies, as well as the lighthouse
keeper who was once his only companion on the island, lend
texture and context—as do essays on the history, geology, and
architecture of the Strofades.
