What is PneuDraw?
PneuDraw is the graphic tool for pneumatic diagrams design. With intuitive graphical user interface, based on MS
Visio software family, a whole SMC Pneumatics Products range can be easily selected and combined into even very
complex schemes.Together with graphical symbols all related technical parameters and business informations are also
available – from interface type and diameter to order code for simple ordering.
PneuDraw is not only simple graphical utility. A smart database engine in the background secures consistency of
whole scheme design process, such as connectors compatibility, pipes diameters and lenghts. These features allow a
designer to focus fully only on the creative development phase only. All associated data, such as part list, part- and
order- numbers are automatically generated by export functions.
Thanks to these features the PneuDraw becomes very efficient tool for all people involved in pneumatic circuits
design and development.
PneuDraw overview.
PneuDraw is primarily dedicated as a design tool for all engineers, developing pneumatic circuits. Consequently is
also useful for sales persons, to be able easily convert a designed circuit schema to part list and order list, without
vasting time by searching in book-type catalogues. Also it is aimed at easy archiving of developed schemes and
following modifications with immediately generated order lists.

How to use PneuDraw?

PneuDraw is a member of SMC Pneumatics software family, which is designed to help our customers in whole
process of designing, developing, purchasing and using of SMC product line.
All of configurators, electronic catalogues and other support tools are developed to simplify the use of SMC
products. Components, used in PneuDraw, are permanently binded (by order number) within all these software tools.
No time-consuming catalogue overviewing or book searching, but easy clicking on couple of symbols is sufficient to
design and export part list to online ordering system to purchase all components.

Graphic user interface of PneuDraw
Program PneuDraw as all other programs base of windows application are splitted to main menu, tools and
windows inlduding the drawing area and symbols librarynad it is desingned for creating of pneumatic circuits
PneuDraw interface presents 5 main areas:
 „Main menu” – appears below the Title bar near the top of the main program window.
 „Toolbars” – appears just below the Menu bar in the program window. It presents groups of icons
you can use to quickly access the major functions of the PneuDraw. All of the icons in the toolbar
replicate functions in the Menu Bar, but only a single mouse click is required to access these
functions when you use the Toolbar.
 „Graphic symbol library” – Symbols are arranged in a library according logical chapters of
products. Graphical icons of parts are displayed, after clicking on icon can be appropriate symbol
type/code displayed
 „Workspace with tabs” – main working space to place symbols with 4 switchable tabs to review
Item list, order codes table, summary item table and sequence diagram tab.
 „Drawing area“ – drawing space, where symbols from library are dragged. On workspace can be
grid or horizontal and vertical rules displayed.

Main menu bar and its functions

For most users this will be the main interface to select specific functions of the PneuDraw. At the main menu are 6
parts contatining other functions, In some of the bars are some additionally opening functions. At the next table are
all these functions described including their icons and shortcuts for quick choice. A lot of functions are same or very
similar to common office programs like MS Word Excel and others. Main fucnctons are also described in details in
other sections of this help

„Print preview” function

Displays diagram preview, using page and print options to get an overview of the whole sheet. Printed content
depends on currently selected tab – diagram/item table/order codes.

„Page setup” function

Sets printing properties and workspace settings: format size, orientation, measurements. By setting „Print zoom”
on „Print setup” tab can be print output customized, according to sheet format. On „Page size“ tab can be set
diagram format scale A4,A3 or others. By setting “ Use original scale” is working area splitted to several cuted
views depending from selected printer and working area. By function “Page boundary” is possible to switch
visibility of pages peripheries in working area which help to optimalise to allocate the schema for following print
Workspace format A2 splitted to A4 print sheets. Page Print preview – 2 page view selected. You can see view
boundary are set visible. Print zoom is set to „Use of 2 single pages and what will be printed.
original – 100%“ . Page A4 will be printed and 4 x A4
„Page setup” tab – printing properties:

Both properties sets configured Line, filling and font parameters, that will be used to
create new objects. „Properties“ function sets these parameters for selected objects,
„Default properties“ sets all these values for newly created objects.
The only difference between the windows is in tab Text, which is missing in Default

„Document properties” and „Document stamp”

Document identification information (Name, dates, firm contacts, authors…) to be printed in the corner of the
sheet (when „Document stamp“ is set visible – in „View“ menu). The same function can be set by right clicking on
free space of diagram, and selecting „Document stamp“
There is also the possibility to use “Fixed value text” from panel of tools “Drawing”, and to add single items to
the user drawing description. From these items the “title” can be create in arbitrary structure, location and view
(with border line , etc..)
„New window”, „Cascade” and „Tile”

„New window” opens new empty window to start a new project, or the next instance of a
current project. There are possible separate windows to diagram, item table or order codes,
all linked by automatic focus: the item selected in the diagram is automatically selected in
item table and vice versa. Open windows can be arranged in two ways:
„Cascade” aligns windows in line, from front to background. Only the first one in front is
fully visible.

„Tile” aligns all windows to mosaic on workspace to overview all simultaneously:

Managing open windows:
 „Activate“ – set selected window active

 „OK“ – close dialog
 „Save“ – save selected window
 „Close window“ – closing selected window

 „Tile vertically“ – vert. column of windows
 “Minimize” – minimize selected windows
Note: multiple objects can be selected by holding CTRL with mouse click.
„Find symbol” function

Searching symbols by order code - this function opens a search dialog in left library pane. By enter of code (or
couple of characters from item name, using *, ? convention – one or more arbitrary symbols) can be a symbol found.
There is also the possibility to search by key words ( for example valve, cylinder, etc.)
From result pane can be symbols dragged in workspace, as usually from symbol library or Favorites:

„Import Items” function

Import items („Tools“ – „Import items“) is reverse operation: data in .xml, .txt or .bia formats (from other SMC
applications) can be imported into project (items table is filled and symbols in diagram are placed (in ordered line –
need to be connected in functional circuit).
Workspace with Tabs

Tabs on the workspace in the upper border allow to switch between 4 main parts of the project: Clicking the tab
changes working workspace to appropriate sheet for graphics or item lists. Using more opened workspaces
simultaneusly (with „Window“ and „Arrange windows“ functions) is very useful for complex projects.
 „Diagram” – graphic workspace to work with symbols
 „Item list” – table of items placed in diagram, with symbol IDs
 „Order codes” – table of items represented by SMC catalogue order codes, with compatible
accessories, this list also summarize items with the same code (as pipes…)
 „Sequence“ – tab with sequential diagram graphically represented status changes of pneumatic
circuit, as a valves and actuators movements.
Toolbars
Toolbars are sets of icons, grouped into functional blocks. Toolbar panes can be switched between visible and
hide to simplify workspace without displaying the unused icons. („View“ - „Toolbar“).

„Align” pane
Objects on workspace can be aligned in several ways to unify position, size and distances. Preferred is size of the
object, not the position of attachment points (ports). The size of the given object also includes the text label,
therefore it is a recommend practice to associate the order code before alignment of the symbols. The label can be
switched off by right clicking menu on object.

Move item up/ It moves the selected items of partlist upward and downward. The number of item is
down changed automaticaly as number of position in partlist as well in diagram including the
accessories connected to basic article. There is the possibility to mark more items by key
SHIFT. Warning: it is not possible to move only accessory without the basic article!.
„Sequence” pane

Add/Remove device Items from circuit on Schema tab are represented on Sequence tab as a devices rows.
row Rows can be freely added, removed and described by text labels.
Change states Detailed events – device states are represented by points on the timeline, as a
diagram. Dragging these points can be graph formed into Sequence diagram. .
Add event link Points of Sequence diagram .can be linked and labelled for better understanding.
Sequence diagram Sequence diagram.can be also inserted in working schema on Schema tab,
dynamically linked each other.

Graphic symbol library tabs
The symbol library contains a set of pneumatic symbols, which can represente the pneumatic parts. The upper
part of symbol tab (with symbols groups) contains a tree structure of pneumatic categories like Air line equipments,
solenoid valves etc (expandable by clicking). The lower part (with choice of symbols) is lists individual symbols in
each category. Standardized graphics and short title of symbol are displayed.

„Favorites” tab
Often used symbols can be dragged from library or digram to the Favorites tab In this tab frequently used
symbols can easily be found, without browsing categories from hierarchic structure.

„Templates” tab
The symbol library consists of single pneumatic parts. To use a set of often used symbols, as a functional blocks
– simple pneumatic circuits, the Templates tab can be used. This tab, as a part of left-sided Symbol library pane, is
organized in common pneumatic categories, and these templates can be used simply by dragging into diagrams.
Also a custom template (often used block of symbols) created by user can be added ( menu “File” - “Save as
template”– in contrary to „Favorites“, where only single symbols can be saved. To delete a template, simply right-
click on it, and choose „Delete“.

„Autohide” function
Clicking the pin sign on library symbol tab can be collapsed to vertical bar. When moving the cursor over the
bar, the library tab is expanded to full size. Workspace size is incrased to better manage of great diagrams.

Symbol selecting, placing and describing

1) select and click appropriate pneumatic category in Symbol tab

2) member parts of the selected category are displayed in bottom window of the tab.
3) by clicking and dragging of selected symbol on the workspace, the part is placed in diagram
4) placing connection points (ports) of symbols, or using links and manifolds the part symbols can be
connected. After connecting incompatible parts (or ports), or using wrong order codes an error message will be
displayed.
5) Compatibility check function can be also switched off, for testing purposes, or temporary incompleted
diagrams. (using „Validate connection“ icon in Drawing pane on/off)

The components located in the diagram are possible to group into the funtion blocks, through multiple selection and
panel “Group”. The group of componetns made like this can have one common order code, but list of single parts is
kept for case the block is splitted back to single parts.
Each associated symbol has an automatic number position, which is displayed as a text in the schematic
diagram. This position can be moved up or down the list (using arrows in „Items“ pane). The number label in
diagram is automaticaly renumberred.
A custom description of the symbol is also possible (right-click menu, item „Label“, „Add user label“). This
label is linked with the symbol and moved together with it. Up to 10 custom labels can be added.

On the contrary to custom labels, the „Text“ function (from „Drawing“ pane) creates independent text object, to
describe the common parts of the diagram,which are not connected to any symbol on it.
Various text label types from right-click menu are:
 Standard – standard description; numeric value

 Extended – enhanced description; number + order code
 User label – custom, defined description (e.g. text for sequence diagram)
Note: Object „Text“ , on the contrary to „Label“, is represented as a item list row.
Note: Also special characters as „diameter“, „percentage sign“ can be inserted in labels. “AutoCAD-like”
shortcuts are used:
%%d enters „ degree“ sign
%%c enters „circle diameter“ sign
%%p enters „plus-minus“ sign

There is the possibility to write in text also multiline text, when the rows are splitted by Enter.
By selecting multiple items is possible to label all these parts in one group:
Order codes associating

Order codes are associated to the symbol by selecting „Order codes“ from right-click menu, or double-clicking
the symbol. Order codes are managed in the following dialog window:

From “Order item “ select type of symbol parameter:
„Product codes“ – opens list of compatible order codes from

SMC catalog
„Accessory“ – opens hierarchical list of compatible accessories
to select order code from SMC catalog (when several
connection points exist, select pull-down list „Place - point)“.
„Custom code“– a specific product code can be associated to
the symbol (other manufacturer, own production…)
„Comment“ – note or special assigning text
“Add” – add selected type of parameter. Multiple codes can be

added without closing the windows (repeat “Add” action)
„Remove“ – deletes the associated order code from the list
Hierarchical tree of the associated order codes and accessories
can be collapsed or expanded to all branches.
„Replace” – change associated code, without deleting it
„Edit” – change particular parameter – e.g. quantity
To help you select the right accessory to already existing basic

item, there is an option to alow “Only compatible” accessories
from whole SMC part catalogue.
Vice versa, “Show all” button is accessible in this mode. and

only the compatible speed cotrollers will be offered.
All lists are hierarchically ordered in groups, so

“Collapse/expand” command changes viewing mode.
When working with order codes, „Items“ table is completed with the given data. All parts which are not defined
at this moment are assigned by red note „Unassigned symbol“, to easily remember incomplete items.
Selected item in item list is also automatically selected in all other tabs, so it is possible easy to identify
appropriate symbol in graphic diagram.

If there is item add to the product as its accessory, so the symbol of these accessory component is add to the
diagram ( when the symbol exists) and is add to right position base to defined connection point
Also to this accessory is possible to add additional accessory ( when it exists) and to create deep structure, which is
in partlist digestedly shown as cascade. (e.g. autoswitch to the cylinder, or pressure gauge to regulator).

After order code associating it is possible (moving mouse cursor over its row) to view the main parameters(type,
description, order codes and accessories) and also quickly add or change all order codes.
Moving cursor over symbol in a diagram, parameter window is displayed, with description, order codes main
item and accessories.

In case of ISO cylinders is possible to choice non standard stroke, and the parametr of stroke is possible to insert
also to the text with name of article , which is shown in the description in diagram, There is also the possibility to
add the accessories
Connecting symbols, links, pipes calculating

Symbols in diagram can be linked together by „Link“ tool from „Drawing“ toolbar:

 Click left mouse button on the first connection point (port), then click on the second point on another

 Repeat steps to make all needed connections (piping) , to close action right-mouse click anywhere on
workspace, or press ESC .
Connections can be edited by selecting the link (green points are displayed) and moving these editing points to
new position.

In case of pipe (tube) positioning, pipes of same diameter in the „order codes“ table are automatically
summarized in packing items to order. Note, that for piping is especially usefull “Only compatible” option in “order
code associating” window.

The line – tube is fully valid article item, and it can have also its own accessories:

In “Item list” are separated pipes with lenghts per piece:
In “Order codes table” are pipes items summarized accordings to order code , to given packing units (as described in
next Chapter):

„Item list”, „Order codes table”
Item list and order codes table show symbols used in diagram, represented by its identification codes, SMC
catalog order codes and several descriptions, defined by the user.
Main difference in these tabs:
“Items” – each symbol from the diagram are shown here in a row of the list. Other parameters, as quantity,
position number and accessories codes are displayed in an expandable tree structure.
Also multiple parts with same code have separate row in part list with the number of the position. Using arrows
from „Items“ toolbar can be items moved up/down the list. Accessories have to be moved only with given item.

“Order codes” – list of SMC order codes of each item. Mutliple parts are represented as a sum of all positions.
.Moving up/down in this list is not possible. This list is primarily used as ordering process and part lists calculation.
To “Item” list, which is generated automatically, from diagram, can be parts also added manually – by right click
menu, or INSERT key:

It is also possible to move multiple rows in Item list together, only i tis necessary to select items in same level,
accessories moves automatically with basic article:

Attention:
Only accessories cannot be moved, without main item !
Order list table is mainly used as ordering list – each item is listed only once, with quantity, calculated from
whole diagram. Therefore is here also possibility to multiply the whole table by production quantity for ordering of
more sets of projects.

Sequential diagram
This is tool intended to show the relation in running process of pneumatic components, as far as these are
working in reality and to describe the sequence of particular movements and steps as complex sequential diagram in
“Sequence tab”.
Parts moving
With simple “drag and drop” function is possible to move the item presented by schematic symbol in library tab
to sequence tab inlcluding its label, which is moved automatically with the symbol. There is a posibility to add
particular positions of cylinder and edit them ( cancel, add, move) These conditions presents the positions of
autoswitches on the cylinder.

Add Item
There is also possible to add or cancel item manually - by buttons.from “Sequence” pane. This
procedure allows to add the item to sequential diagram not only when it has a symbol in scheme.
Continuance of functions
It is illustrated by spline shape – curve, it can be modified by mouse dragging points in grid limited by time
(sequence) steps (X axis) and definite positions (status changes) – Y axis. Colours are selectable, there is possibility
to edit them by pressing of mouse button as well as line thickness or type of line, there are setup to default and
optional, same as total number of steps (Mouse button – Model properties.)

Graph description
Illustrating functions in step by step sequence diagram, it is also possible to describe graph by text and/or by
lines with arrows to explain relations and logical links between devices and its states.
Colours are possible to choice by mouse as “Properties”, just as line thickness, type of line . Text can be placed
to lines or graph points by click to icon “A” (“Text”) in toolbar.
Event links can be added from “Sequence” pane as straight, or pointed arrow, again with explaining text labels:
Exported-imported data formats

PneuDraw allows to save the project into several different data fines. These outputs can be graphics or text data.
The standard graphic output file has the suffix „.smpd“ which is created as native file of program PneuDraw
and its content is the scheme and also the partlist and the list of order codes. Another graphic ouptput possibility is
the export to .dxf file as 2D data Only the designed scheme is exported.
Text outputs are saved to files „.xls”, „.txt” or „.bia”. The content of these files are only text data from the items
list or the list of order codes and can be used for ordering parts from SMC.

How to setup the network version
1) All users should run SmcPneuDraw.exe from common network share (e.g. \\Server\Share\PneuDraw).
Appropriate SmcPneuDraw.ini should contain correct paths to common (shared) data:

2) In the \\Server\Share\PneuDraw\Templates folder create subfolder for shared user-defined templates (e.g.
“OurCompany”). In the folder \\Server\Share\PneuDraw\Templates also create UNICODE text file
“OurCompany.lng” (name of file should be the same as created folder) with next content:

If you’ll examine *.lng files in the Templates folder, you’ll see the pattern.
3) Create templates you wish to share in the regular way. Those user-defined templates are always stored in the user
profile. Locate the folder with those files in the next path: %APPDATA%\SMC\PneuDraw\Templates.
4) Copy all template files (*.smpd and *.smpd.lng) to the shared location:
\\Server\Share\PneuDraw\Templates\OurCompany.
5) Start the application from location \\Server\Share\PneuDraw\SmcPneuDraw.exe.
