Grade 7 Social Studies Project:

Footprints of Exploration

Footprints of Exploration
Canada’s National Museum of History is adding to its exhibits to present a more
comprehensive display of early European exploration of Canada. The key message
of the display is to consider the impact or the ‘footprint’ that each explorer left
behind.

As an intern curator at the museum, you are part of a team working on developing
the content for the exhibit. Each team will select one British and one French
explorer.

For each exhibit, you will need to do the following.

Describe Historical Context

For your selected British and French explorer, provide information about
 the explorer’s name, date(s) of exploration and sponsoring country;
 the scope of exploration by describing exploration route(s); and
 significant events taking place in Europe and in North America at the time of
the exploration.

Analyze Imperialism
In your analysis, consider the following questions in relation to your selected British
and French explorer.
 How did this explorer reflect the goals of European imperialism?
 How did his exploration impact the development of settlements?
 How did his exploration impact the social and economic structures of
Aboriginal societies?

Evaluate Sources
 For each source you consult, prepare an evaluation that includes information
about authorship, perspective, consistency with other sources, and
acknowledgement of sources cited. Include the source evaluations for the
curator when you submit the content for your exhibit.

You may present your findings to the museum curator through a google slides
presentation that will be presented to the class.
