1 N2 EIM Overview
The Equipment Interface Module (EIM) was designed as a master CAN bus device for the Schlumberger
CoilCAT data acquisition system but it will also function as N2 EIM on a nitrogen pump when configured
for N2 mode. This document describes the procedure for installing and configuring the EIM as N2 EIM on
a nitrogen pump unit.
• Serves as operator’s monitor panel to displays main working parameters of an N2 pump. It monitors
N2 flow rate based on the pump speed, N2 total volume, N2 pressure, and N2 temperature.
• Serves as a safety device that shuts the pump down when a pre-set N2 discharge pressure limit is
exceeded (overpressure shutdown feature).
• Transfers the monitored parameters to CoilCAT acquisition system via SDS/CAN bus.
2 Specifications
2.1 Electrical
2.1.1 Power
• Voltage
The N2 EIM is powered by 9 to 28 VDC to connector J4 located on the main EIM board.
Note: Even though the EIM will operate at 9 VDC, the sensors connected to the EIM may
need 16 to 24 VDC. Therefore the recommended voltage to power the EIM is 24 VDC.
• Current
LCD backlight OFF: 150 mA DC
LCD backlight ON: 350 mA DC
• Fuse (F1)
0.5 amps, 125 V, plug in, Littelfuse® MICRO™ Fuse, very fast acting, Littlefuse catalog

3 Installation
3.1 Mechanical Installation:
1. Cut an opening of suitable size or make a suitable bracket. Refer to Appendix A for the mounting
dimensions and the footprint of the EIM enclosure.
3. Unscrew four 6-32 screws holding the LCD screen and carefully lift the screen. Disconnect the
LCD ribbon cable and two LCD backlight power wires from J11-1 and J11-2. Put the LCD screen
aside.
4. Carefully disconnect the keypad ribbon cable connector and put the lid aside.
Note: If the N2 EIM is being installed on unit rated for use in a Zone 2 hazardous area then use cable
glands and connectors that are approved for use in Zone 2 and appropriate for the cable used.
2. Connect wires according to the wiring schematic and the wiring assignment tables below.
The actual sensor wiring connection may vary from unit to unit depending on the kind of sensor
used to sense N2 pump speed.
Appendix B contains N2 EIM wiring schematics for the following:
1) Rev L and above EIM Boards used with a NPN type proximity switch rate sensor.
2) Rev L and above EIM Boards used with a PNP type proximity switch rate sensor.
3) Rev a through j EIM Boards used with a NPN type proximity switch rate sensor.
Note: Older installations using Rev L and above EIM boards must rewire the proximity sensor to
match the wiring as in 1 or 2 above and update the firmware to 3.14x or higher.
WARNING: If the EIM has a wire installed between terminals J1-9 and J15-1 (See Appendix B
wiring Schematic) then this wire MUST be removed when used as a N2 EIM. Failure to remove
this wire can cause damage beyond repair.
A proximity switch is usually used to sense N2 pump speed. There are three basic types of
proximity sensors that can be used with the N2 EIM:
1. Three wire PNP proximity sensor.
2. Three wire NPN proximity sensor.
3. Two wire proximity sensor.
The three wire NPN and Two wire type proximity sensors require a 5k ohm pull up resistor to be
installed as shown in Appendix B (section 8.1)
If a magnetic pickup is used, its signal needs to be routed through an additional signal
amplifier/conditioner with the square wave output (12V peak-to-peak recommended).
4 N2 EIM Setup
4.1 Initial power up
Power up the N2 EIM and observe the LCD screen for the firmware version number while it boots up. In
order for N2 EIM to operate properly, it requires firmware version “3.14x” or later.
Update the firmware if necessary. Refer to Appendix C for the firmware update procedure.
If the EIM boots in a mode other than N2, first change the operating mode to N2.
If the EIM boots in the N2 mode, the following parameters will be displayed on the screen: N2 Volume, N2
Rate, N2 Pressure and N2 Temperature. The Backlight may start blinking on and off about once a second.
This is a warning that the N2 Pressure limit has been exceeded. To stop the backlight from blinking, the
pressure limit must be entered then the overpressure limit can be reset as described in section 4.3.8
below.
The Mode selection prompts for verification or selection of a mode change for the EIM.
2. Press “5”, and then press “ENTER” to confirm the N2 mode. After the mode number is entered the
N2 EIM must be power cycled.
After entering the desired over pressure limit the following prompt will be displayed:
The Unit Type is set by the numeric entry indicated in the following table.
Table 4-8 N2 EIM Units Selection
After entering the desired units the following prompt will be displayed:
After entering the desired SDS (CAN) address, the display will return to the base menu.
Enter the N2 rate K factor. See Appendix C for determining the correct K factor to enter here.
Press Menu [F6] > Press [F2] > Kf [F1] The following prompt is displayed:
Enter the N2 pressure K factor. See Appendix C for determining the correct K factor to enter here.
Enter pressure offset. See Appendix C for determining the correct pressure offsetto enter here.
Enter the N2 Temperature K factor. See Appendix C for determining the correct K factor to enter
here.
Enter Temperature offset. See Appendix C for determining the correct Temperature offset to enter
here.
In order to reset the overpressure shutdown, the pressure reading has to be less than 95% of the
overpressure limit.
Note: When connected to the CoilCAT system for the first time, the CoilCAT EIM might not see the
N2 EIM as a SIM. This problem will be resolved when the CoilCAT program communicates with
the EIM.
Once CoilCAT program is started and connected to the EIM, and Acquisition is ON, CoilCAT
software will start receiving data from the N2 EIM. This can be verified by looking at the EIM
mapping tab.
A separate N2 EIM tab will appear in the EIM Sensor Setup window as shown on Fig. 12.
The N2 EIM cannot be programmed from CoilCAT program like the UniSIM except for changing
the name. The rest should be programmed from N2 EIM front panel.
The N2 EIM will start sending the following data to its COM port using Datascribe protocol as soon
as it is powered up: N2 Rate1, N2 Discharge Volume, N2 Pressure, and N2 Discharge
Temperature. The values and the units will exactly correspond to ones on the N2 EIM screen.
The data can be displayed and recorded using either CoilCAT or CemCAT software.
1. With N2 EIM connected to the laptop serial port start CoilCAT a normal way
• Port: COM1;
• Data Bits: 8;
• Stop Bits: 1;
• Parity: None;
9. Start Acquisition
11. Once the datascribe header is received (in a minute or sooner) the channels will be
automatically mapped.
Note: N2 Discharge Volume will be reset every time the pump operator resets the N2 Volume
on his panel. If needed, the N2 Discharge Volume can be disabled by selecting [Unmapped] in
the Channel Name column in Mapping tab.
1. With the N2 EIM connected the laptop serial port, start CemCAT in a normal way.
• Port: COM1;
• Data Bits: 8;
• Stop Bits: 1;
• Parity: None;
6. Press OK. Press OK. Start Acquisition and go to the Mapping tab.
7. Once the datascribe header is received (in a minute or sooner) the channel mapping will
appear in the tab.
8. If some of the channels are unmapped, they need to be manually mapped in Channel
Name column and the correct units selected in Acquired In Unit column. For example the
first channel (N2 Rate1) can be mapped to CXMT_SPARE_RATE1.
Note: N2 Discharge Volume will be reset every time the pump operator resets the N2 Volume
on his panel. If needed, the N2 Discharge Volume can be disabled by selecting [Unmapped] in
the Channel Name column in Mapping tab.

To calculate standard cubic feet per revolution for a triplex nitrogen pump:
2
SCF/Rev. = (Plunger diameter) x (Stroke Length) x .85484
To calculate K factor (Kf) for the N2 EIM in SCF per pulse for a triplex nitrogen pump:
Enter the calculated Kf into the N2 Rate K factor menu in Section 4.3.3
To calculate the Pressure Offset for a 4-20 mA sensor, use the following equation:
Offset = - Pmax / 4
Example: For 0-15000 psi 4-20 mA pressure transducer Offset = - (15000 / 4) = - 3750.
Where: Pmax is the maximum pressure that corresponds to the 20mA signal.
65535 is a decimal equivalent of maximum digital output value of a 16-bit A/D converter.
Example: For 0-15000 psi 4-20 mA pressure transducer, Kf = (15000 + 3750)*1.03046/65535 =0.29482
Where: Tmax is the temperature that corresponds to 20mA Temperature sensor signal.
65535 is a decimal equivalent of maximum digital output value of a 16-bit A/D converter
o
Example: For a 0-300 F 4-20 mA temperature transducer, Kf = (300 + 75) * 1.03046/65535 = 0.00590
