Abstract

Title of the study

Aerodentis – The Aeronautical Orthodontics
Need for the study
Nobody wants to have metal bands and wires pulling on their teeth for a year or more, but
everybody wants to have an appealing smile. Every patient’s need is a treatment which gives the
desired outcome and is pain free. The philosophy of orthodontics is based on continuous light forces,
that is, having the optimum orthodontic force level which doesn’t occlude the blood vessels of
periodontal ligament and simultaneously allows for the tooth movement to occur. Aerodentis is one
such device which mimics the body’s natural rhythm and works by using air pressure to move teeth
gradually while sleeping without inducing any pain.
Aim
To create a working model of Aerodentis
Objectives
The objectives of this group project were to make a prototype for bringing about tooth movement
with the help of air pressure created by the air pump.
Methodology
A poster which showed the application of aerodentis used for bringing about tooth movement, their
advantages and limitations was jotted down. A prototype model of the aerodentis was built which
consisted of air pump to inflate the balloon, a model of 6 teeth and a cylinder of acrylic to contain the
balloon when it gets inflated and allow the pressure of the balloon to get dissipated on the teeth to
bring about the tooth movement.

1. Introduction

1.1 Overview of the selected topic

Over the decades, as the individual has become more aware of their aesthetics mainly having a
pleasing smile leading to increased demand of orthodontic treatment along with aesthetics
maintained during the whole treatment. Hence, aerodentis is a device which brings about painless
tooth movement and is worn only at night, thus maintaining the aesthetics.

1.2 Relevance for the current scenario

 The device is safe and flexible and suitable for all ages.
 The device is intended to use at night for sleeping and the wear time is only 10 hours per day.
 No obstacle in maintaining oral hygiene.
 Have fewer visits to the doctor.

3. Aim and Objectives

● Aim
To build a device that shows the working of the Aerodentis

 Objectives
The objectives of this group project were to bring about tooth movement using light
continuous pressure.

Mechanism of Aerodentis
Aerodentis works by using air pressure to move your teeth gradually while you sleep! It is comprised of a
plastic mouthpiece containing an inflatable balloon that provides pulsating pressure (force) on the selected
teeth designed to be moved to a final treated state. The inflatable balloon is inflated to the desired pressure
using an electrical air Pump Unit.
The pulsating force compared to continuous force accelerates the rate of tooth and thereby reduces the
treatment duration

Conclusions and suggestions for future work

To conclude:
Wearing an appliance only at night isn’t just a cosmetic and comfort advantage over braces. Aerodentis
users don’t have to worry about mouth abrasions from wire, don’t have to avoid chewing gum and other
sticky foods, and can clean their teeth easily and thoroughly. But it still has limitations of not being able
to correct moderate malocclusions, a Class III malocclusion, impacted teeth, extraction cases, spaced
dentition without proclination. Hence, a modification of the device which would involve correction of
variety of malocclusion can be worked upon.
