Reflective Journal No. 1: Biesta G. (2009) Good Education in an age of
measurement: on the need to reconnect with the question of purpose in
education.

New Concepts

I learned three (3) significant ideas on which the writer brought up in his article. These
are the ideas of Qualification, Socialization, and Subjectification.

Qualification is that the students must become familiar with all the essential
information and aptitudes for them to be prepared on the world ahead.

Socialization constrains these abilities and learning dependent on the social

standards, laws, and so forth meaning, students are relied upon to utilize every one of
their learnings to adhere to the guidelines set by society.

Ultimately, Subjectification moves the students to utilize their training to make

new things that could bring advancement, change, and avoid the authoritative opinion
of the present-day society that upsets development and improvement.

Knowledge

All the three ideas can be effectively found with regards to the Philippine
Education, yet more often than not there is a contention between the idea of
subjectification and socialization.

For instance, we are educated in school what to do when singing or paying

tribute to our national song of praise (Qualification). We are standing straight, putting
our correct arm to one side chest, and so forth during the banner service
(Socialization). Singing the national song of praise contrastingly is culpable under our
laws however some can do it during the past battles of Senator Pacquiao
(Subjectification).

Basic Questions

The inquiries that emerge on Biesta's exchange on his article were: (1) What is
the correct thing to quantify 'the estimation of what we measure or the estimating of
what we esteem'? (2) Why is there a next to no express discourse that establishes
decent training? what's more, (3) What is the reason for Education and what is it to
instruct others?

Reflection

The article demonstrated that we presently live during a time in which training
is commanded by estimation and examinations of instructive results. The risk is that
we wind up esteeming what is estimated, as opposed to we take part in estimation of
what we esteem. We along these lines need to keep the subject of direction – the topic
of what comprises great instruction since this significant for the routine with regards to
tutoring.
