The History of Volleyball

Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan at the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke,
MA. At first, the game was called Mintonette, but in 1896 the game began to be called Volleyball, and the name stuck.
Volleyball was developed after a group of local businessmen asked Mr. Morgan to come up with a game that was less
strenuous and physically demanding than basketball, but that would still give them a workout. The resulting game was a
blend of skills and elements from basketball, handball, and tennis. In 1928, the United States Volleyball Association was
formed, and volleyball was introduced to the Olympics in 1964 at the Tokyo Games. The United States men’s team even
won a Gold medal at the 1988 Olympic Games in Korea.

The Rules of the Game

There are six players on two opposing teams on separate courts divided by a net in the game of Volleyball. The
object of the game is to send a ball over the net so the opposing team cannot return the ball or prevent it from hitting the
floor. Only three hits are allowed before the ball must be returned over the net, unless the first hit is a block, then three
more hits are still allowed to be made. If a ball hits a boundary line on the court the ball is considered in play. A game
continues until the ball hits the floor, goes out of bounds, or a team fails to return the ball properly. According to the
official rules, games are played to 25, and points can be earned by any team at any time. You do not have to be serving in
order to win a point, this is called Rally Scoring. For our purposes in PE class games will be played up to 15 points. A ball
that hits the net on the serve and lands on the opposing team’s side is considered in play. Once a team receives the ball
for their second serve of the game they must first rotate clockwise, (this happens after the opponent has already served).
Finally, a single player cannot hit the ball two consecutive times in a row. If a team hits the ball and it is out of bounds, but
still on their side of the net, they can move out of bounds and play the ball.

Scoring in Volleyball
As mentioned before games are played to 25 points officially, but we will be playing to 15 points in class. A match is
played best two out of three games, meaning in order to win the match your team must win two of the three games.
