As well as making money, businesses also have social responsibilities.

To what
extent do you agree or disagree?

Besides maximising profits, it is widely believed that taking social responsibilities also makes
outstanding contribution to brands’ images and reputations. I completely agree with the idea
that businesses should pay more attention to social obligations than simply make money.

On the one hand, I accept that for survival of businesses, especially small businesses in a
competitive market it is no more crucial than concentrating on making money. The first
reason is that any company needs a gigantic enough budget to cover its running costs,
including employees’ wages and bonuses and payments for buildings and facilities.
Furthermore, when companies make higher profits, it allows them to expand their
businesses, invest in improvements and invovations so that they could remain successful.
For example, Apple, known as one of the largest companies in the world, has been
employing hundreds of thousands of individuals in raft of different countries. As a result,
hardly can it pay salaries for its employees without having a good financial health.

On the other hand, corporations should have a duty to fulfil societal needs instead of solely
striving for more and more money. Firstly, since the exponential urbanization these days has
caused wide spread environmental degradation, what companies need to do right away is to
take actions to protect the natural environment. For example, Business Waste Ltd, a
pharmaceutical multinational company, has applied new technologies to recycle its wastes
instead of disposing of them immediately. Secondly, I also like the idea that corporations
should use a proportion of their profits to support local charities or education initiatives.

For the reasons mentioned above, I believe that it would be better for businesses to consider
the implementation of social responsibilities as important as the fulfillment of their financial
objectives.
