Higher Diploma in Civil Engineering

1) Objective
The purpose of this exercise is to carry out a detail survey of an area in order to
produce a 1:200 scale basic survey plan by a CAD Drawing.

2) Venue
Open Area of the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Tsing Yi).

3) Equipment
Total Station, 1 no. Target prism, 1 no. pocket tape, 1 no. tripod

4) Field Procedures
a) Carry out a site reconnaissance of the survey area based all the information &
filed data provided

b) Make site sketch of your area

c) Use the total station to carry out a survey of the area by Radiation method with
the control framework established in practical #2; following features shall be
surveyed:

Road, Footpath, Building line & Fence line etc

Utilities features (i.e. Manholes, draw pit & light etc

Sufficient spot level (i.e. 5m spacing)

d) Each instrument set up requires two backsights with horizontal & distance
observations

e) Reduce all observations in coordinates in spreadsheet format for future use.

5) Report format

a) Each group is required to submit their survey field records together with the
results of all computations related to the project after the survey.
