Introduction

The new IEEE 802.11ac wireless standard is the next generation of the 802.11 Wi-Fi family,
which builds on improving 802.11n data rates. According to IEEE 802.11ac working group
started developing the standard from 2011 to 2013 then finally approved in Jan 2014 (IEEE
802.11 TIMELINES, 2014). After passing the amendment the new standard intends to improve
higher multi user throughput and achieve greater user experience by providing data rates at
least to 1 Gbps and up to 7 Gbps in the 5 GHz band (Kelly, 2014).

Nowadays citizens in the UAE are using more smartphones and tablet devices in their daily life
to make a call, sending email, video chat and using social sites. Also it is common to see a
person with multiple devices thus a growing demand for fast internet access on these devices in
the UAE are running out of capacity fast. Not only does straining the wireless bandwidth is the
only concern but also a growing trend of corporate BYOD which in turn transform the
workplace and sometimes becomes mission critical for some company’s in the UAE industries
(Watson, 2012).

Research Proposal Question

The research will undertake a secondary investigation and answer the following primary
questions:
Why is IEEE 802.11AC not used in the UAE in the private and public sector?

The Following are sub-questions which will be investigated:

Is the new standard important for the companies in the UAE?
What are the advantages of the new IEEE standard over the old standards?

These questions are important because there is a new standard of wireless in the UAE and not
many companies using it. The new standard is very fast and advanced which is why companies
need to use the new wireless standards.
Aims and Objectives

The purpose of this study is to raise awareness of the potential ac technology and to improve
the bandwidth challenges of current Wi-Fi technology in the UAE. In addition, one of the
objective of this proposal is to conduct comparative evaluation between the current Wi-Fi
technology and the new 802.11ac wireless technology.

Furthermore, this research proposal of introducing IEEE 802.11ac to business in the UAE is
crucial since the industries are starting to recognize the potential for higher speed internet and
Wi-Fi as a means to help advance invention in the workplace and help deliver new services
which result in increasing their capital and revenues.

Conclusion

In conclusion this research proposal will investigate why companies in the UAE in private and
public sectors are not sufficiently using the new IEEE 802.11ac wireless technology. Since high
speed internet are now crucial in the UAE industry, from small business to enterprises ranging
from government to private sectors.
