Union and Intersection of Events

WORKSHEET 1

Name:____________________________ Gr.&Sc.____________ Date:___________

Simple Events

Consider the situation below. Use your knowledge on probability in answering the questions

that follow.

1. A die is rolled once. Find the probability of obtaining

a. a 4

b. a 1

c. an even number.

2. A box contains 4 red balls, 5 green balls, and 3 white balls. If a ball is picked at ramdom

from the box, what is the probability that a ball picked is a

a. red ball?

b. white ball?

c. Green ball?

Compound Events

Consider the following situation below and answer the questions that follow.

1. Two dice are rolled simultaneously. List the possible outcomes.

Dice 1 2 3 4 5 6

a. What is the probalibility of "getting a 4 and a 2"?

b. What is the probablity of "getting a 1 and a 5".?

Concepts to remember:
*Experiments-activities such as rolling a die, tossing a coin, or randomly choosing a ball from a box
which could be repeated over and over again which have well-defined results.
*Outcomes-the results of an experiment.
*Sample Space-the set of all outcomes in an experiment.
*Event-a subset of the sample space.
*Compound Events-consists of two or more simple events. .
The Probability of an Event E, denoted as P(E) is given by:

𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑜𝑐𝑐𝑢𝑟 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑜𝑢𝑡𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑡
𝑃(𝐸) = or 𝑃(𝐸) = 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑜𝑢𝑡𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑎𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑒 𝑠𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑒
𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑏𝑙𝑒 𝑜𝑢𝑡𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑠
