Research Projects Completed Recently Revision of Fatigue Design Provisions This project was taken up with IIT/Roorkee for development of provisions to match the latest research in the field of assessment of fatigue life in advanced countries. The project was started in the 2003-04 and ‘completed in 2007-08. The fatigue provisions of countries such as British Standards, European Standards ‘American and Australian Standards were studied. It was found appropriate to follow the procedure and approach ‘as given in Euro codes. This work has been completed ‘and the outcome discussed in the 78" BSC. The implications of the provisions have been worked out and the results were discussed in CBEs Seminar held in November, 09. The item was again discussed in 79° BSC in March, 10 and approved finally. Correction Slip No. 18 has been incorporated in IRS Bridge Code after approval from Railway Board Condition Assessment of Bridges Using ration Signature Analysis Mathematical models of two bridges have been ‘created by which static analysis can be performed for self weight, dead loads, pre-stressing forces and live loads. ‘The module can be used to compute natural frequencies ‘and mode-shapes. Field measurements indicated that: ® Displacement of bridge at a location cannot be obtained reliably by numerical integration of acceleration measured, Measured frequencies cannot be used for updating model reliably due to large spatial variation and uncertainties in material properties. wR SS ‘Re oreregsy Transerming Ratraye Thus it has been concluded that the traditional vibration measurements and signature analysis techniques may result in significant errors when applied for condition assessment. The experimental work and analysis of field observations has led to the conclusion that it is not feasible to deploy this technology for condition monitoring of concrete bridges at present. Rallway Board has approved closure of the project. Development of Guidelines for Seismic Design of Railway Bridges The provision of seismic design are very old and after the major earthquake of Bhuj, need was felt for re- looking the existing provisions of seismic design for the design of new bridges considering the developments in BIS and other international standards, A project was taken up with IIT/Kanpur. The project started in 2007-08 and followed up regularly. The final Guidelines have been developed and have been Circulated to all zonal railways. A training programme for the field engineers was organized in May 2011 at ITiKanpur. The project has been completed. The Correction Slips to IRS Bridge Rule, IRS Concrete Code and IRBM are under approval.
