ASSIGNMENT NO. 2

A PL ½ x 8 tension member is connected with six 25 mm diameter bolts, as shown in

the figure. The steel is ASTM A242. Assume that Ae = An and compute the following in
SI unit:
a.) The design strength for LRFD.
b.) The allowable strength for ASD.

Solution:
For yielding of the gross section
Ag=(8in.)(1/2in.)(25.4mm/1in)2 = 2580.64 mm2
Nominal strength
Pn= FyAg = (340 MPa)(2580.64mm2) = 877.4176 KN

For fracture of the net section

An=(Ag - Aholes) = 2580.64 – (12.7)(25 + 3)(2) = 1869.44 mm2
Ae = An = 1869.44 mm2
Nominal Strength
Pn = FuAe = (480MPa)( 1869.44 mm2 )
Pn = 897.3312 KN

a.) The design strength for LRFD

Based on yielding
ΦtPn = 0.90(877.4176) = 789.67584 KN

Based on fracture
ΦtPn = 0.75(897.3312) = 672.9984 KN

Ans: ΦtPn = 672.9984 KN

b.) The allowable strength for ASD

Based on yielding
Pn/ Ωt = (877.4176)/(1.67) = 525.40 KN
Based on fracture
Pn/ Ωt = (897.3312)/(2.0) = 448.67 KN

Ans: Pn/ Ωt = 448.67 KN
