I realised just what it was to keep
these pseudo eels.
For a start they can be
endearingly nervous for the first
night or two, burying their body in
the sand or creeping between
rocks and poking their heads out
just enough to see what’s
happening. After about a
fortnight, the growing confidence
at feeding time was obvious, as
Izzy began scouring high-level
rocks for frozen Mysis and
brineshrimp, and eating pellet
food with no hesitancy.
Not long after that, I started
holding a few pellets between my
fingers in open water, which
instantly got attention. It wasn’t
long before my eel would bolt up
to the surface as soon as my
fingertips hit the water, and Izzy
would swim through wiggling
fingers and come to rest if I
created a tunnel with my hand.
This playfulness and affection(?)
extended to anyone I would allow.
My niece and nephew were
amazed by it all.
Harry Houdini
Not only do spiny eels have
oddball looks, diversity of size
and of habitats, but they also
have an endearing, pet-like
quality. Oh yes, and an ability
to escape that Houdini would
have been proud of!
To keep an eel successfully,
first you must keep an eel in

but it’s not just a case of keeping
the tank lid shut. There aren’t
many off-the-shelf tanks that
will be secure enough for a
spiny eel – I can’t actually think
of any – so you need to adjust,
modify and stuff things in holes
to make it secure.

They were ubiquitous in the 1980s, kept as pets in
18th-century Japan and became the first fish to breed
in space. So why have we never heard of Medaka?
22 PRACTICAL FISHKEEPING
I
T’S POSSIBLY the most studied
vertebrate organism on the
planet, with a history of being
kept as a pet fish that dates
back over 300 years to Japan’s
early Edo period. Yet, quietly
and almost unnoticed, this once
common aquarium fish slowly
disappeared from Europe’s tanks and
these days is virtually unknown to
an entire generation of fishkeepers.
The perfect fish for beginners,
experienced breeders, nano set-ups,
planted tank enthusiasts, or even for
a summertime mini pond – it’s time
Medaka made a comeback.
Starting out
Walk into any aquarium store these
days and you’ll usually spot two
choices for the small, unheated
tanks generally bought by first-time
fishkeepers – the Zebra danio, Danio
rerio, which needs at least 60cm of
tank length to zoom around in, and
the White Cloud Mountain minnow,
Tanichthys albonubes, which is
happiest in tanks with high oxygen
and vigorous flow. Rarely are there
any species on offer that are actually
suited to those small tanks with no
heating, basic filtration and minimal
water movement.
Rewind to the 1980s, however, and
there was a third species as cheap
and ubiquitous as the WCMM and
danio – the Golden medaka, a xanthic
form of the naturally blue-grey-brown
Japanese rice fish, Oryzias latipes.
This tough little surface dweller
has a wide natural distribution and
has colonised any habitat it can
swim into, from brackish mangrove
backwaters and estuaries to cool,
slow-moving rivers and the tropical
swamps and rice paddies it’s named
after. They’ve even managed to
venture into space – in 1994, Medaka

make a difference?
As well as hormone changes inside
the fish, there are metabolites and
other chemicals in the water that
can inhibit growth rates. Much like
hormonal stunting, none of these
constitute a healthy way to keep
fish small.
Ammonia salts, a part of the
fish’s everyday metabolism, build
up in the water, and studies on

indicated that dilution of these

Another little known chemical
is ‘shreckstoff’. This is an alarm

distress (for example, to indicate

when a predator is about – the
smell basically says ‘keep down!’).
The presence of shreckstoff is
itself a cause of stress to fish,
which will produce elevated levels
of the stress hormone cortisol by
way of response.

The benign nature of the smaller Dragonet
species and their compatibility with corals makes
them ideal for peaceful reef aquaria. However,
many Dragonet species are also able to thrive in
busy systems containing dwarf angelfish,
Centropyge spp., and tangs (Acanthuridae)
because they don’t appear to attract the
attentions of these often territorial fish.
In addition, Mandarins and some other species
of Dragonet exude a noxious mucus from
specialised skin cells, which is dangerous to
predators if ingested or if it comes into contact
with an open wound. It’s thought the Dragonets’
spectacular patterning and colouration advertises
this fact, and so many fish know to avoid them.
