Wildlife Conservation!
Wildlife conservation is a practice in which people attempt to protect
endangered species, along with their habitats. The goal is to ensure that
nature will be around for future generations to enjoy, and to recognize the
importance of wildlife.

Importance of wildlife
The wildlife comprises all living organisms (plants, animals, micro-
organisms) in their natural habitats which are neither cultivated nor
domesticated nor tamed. Importance of wildlife is as follows-

1. Ecological balance: Wildlife maintains balance of nature through;

 Regulation of population of different species
 Food chains or passage of food and energy through series of
populations comprising producers consumers and micro-organisms
2. Gene Bank: The wildlife serves as a gene bank for breeding improved
varieties in agriculture, animal husbandry and fishery.
3. Plant propagation: Pollination in certain plants is performed by wild
animals like birds, insects etc and thus help in plant propagation which is
very essential.
4. Cleaning of Environment: Scavengers and decomposed wild animals
(vultures, eagles, jackals, hyenas) as well as micro-organisms which feed
upon dead animals convert them into different nutrients and release energy
back to the nature increasing fertility of the soil. They do very important
work of cleaning the environment.
5. Scientific Importance: For research purpose and study of anatomy,
physiology, ecology, evolutionary aspects.
6. Soil Erosion: It is prevented by plant cover, litter, mixing of litter by
movement of wild animals and conversion to spongy humus by micro-
organisms.
National Reserve
A nature reserve is a protected area of importance for wildlife, flora, fauna or
features of geological or other special interest, which is reserved and
managed for conservation and to provide special opportunities for study or
research.
National Park
National parks are large areas of public land set aside for native plants,
animals and the places in which they live. National parks protect places of
natural beauty.

Popular National Parks of India

1. Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand

2. Gir National Park Sanctuary, Gujarat
3. Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh
4. Kanha National Park, Madhya Pradesh
5. Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary, Rajasthan
6. Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala
7. Kaziranga National Park, Assam
8. Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary

Wildlife threats/Wildlife Conservation in India

One of the foremost reasons for the population decline in wild animals
across India is overcrowding. The wildlife sanctuaries and national parks
have become overcrowded since the time and therefore the capacity have
depleted to a certain extent.
The tourism in national parks is on the rise eachday possibly due to the
increasing fame of eco-tourism and adventure tourism. Subsequently, it leads
to wildlife road fatalities together with the increase in vehicular pollution.
Some chemical industries have also contributed to the wildlife destruction.
These industries discharge chemical and other toxic effluents into the water
there by poisoning it.

National Wildlife Conservation Projects

Project Tiger
Project Tiger is a wildlife conservation project initiated in India in 1972 to
protect the Bengal Tigers. It was launched on April 1, 1973 and has become
one of the most successful wildlife conservation ventures. The project aims
at tiger conservation in specially constituted tiger reserves representative of
various bio-geographical regions throughout India.

UNDP Sea Turtle Project

A significant proportion of world’s Olive Ridley Turtle population migrates

every winter to Indian coastal waters for nesting mainly at eastern coast.
With the objective of conservation of Olive Ridley turtles and other
endangered marine turtles, Ministry of Environment & Forests initiated the
Sea Turtle Conservation Project in collaboration of UNDP in November,
1999 with Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun as the Implementing Agency.

How can wildlife be conserved?

We can conserve wild life in the following ways:

 Maintenance of essential ecological processes and life-support systems.

 Preservation of genetic diversity.

 Sustainable utilization of species and ecosystems.

 Hunting should be banned.

 We must not use products made by animal’s body parts, like elephant ivory and
tiger skins. This will curb hunting and poaching.

 Government has to promote national parks, sanctuaries and reserves.

 Large scale felling of trees for clearing of land for development purposes must be
avoided as it results in destruction of habitat of species.
