QUESTIONS:

What are various steps needed to upgrade a BOXN wagon to make it fit for CC+8+2 loading?

What has been the impact of loading upto CC+6/CC+8? What preventive measures do you suggest to
contain adverse repercussion of the loading CC+6/CC+8?

What are the meaning of CC+6+2 and CC+8+2 loading?

ANSWER

 CC+8+2/CC+6+2 is the types of freight rakes runs in Indian Railways.

 Here CC means carrying capacity. 22.82 t each axel ( in most of Indian railways wagons). A
wagon has 4 axels. Total 91.28 t./wagon. +8/+6 means extra 8/6 t load. +2 means 2 t
tolerance.
 Speed Restrictions is for CC+8+2 is 60 kmph, Speed Restrictions is for CC+6+2 is 75 kmph.
 CC+8+2 loading is not permitted during monsoon season for those commodities which
absorb water such as coal, gypsum, etc.
 Here are some conditions for CC+8+2/CC+6+2/CC+4+2 rakes for run in Railway tracks as per
loading.
1. CC+8+2
a) more than 91.28 t but less than 93.28 t. Get load adjusted/unloaded or run the train not
exceeding 50kmph.
b) more than 93.28 t but less than 95.28 t. Get load adjusted/unloaded or run the train not
exceeding 30kmph.
c) More than 95.28. overloaded wagon detached.
2. CC+6+2
a) more than 89.28 t but less than 91.28 t. Get load adjusted/unloaded or run the train not
exceeding 50kmph.
b) more than 91.28 t but less than 93.28 t. Get load adjusted/unloaded or run the train not
exceeding 30kmph.
c) More than 93.28. overloaded wagon detached.
3. CC+4+2
a) more than 87.28 t but less than 89.28 t. Get load adjusted/unloaded or run the train not
exceeding 50kmph.
b) more than 89.28 t but less than 91.28 t. Get adjusted/unloaded or run the train not
exceeding 30kmph.
c) More than 91.28. overloaded wagon detached.

Adverse impact of loading upto CC+8 and CC+2 Preventive measures to avoid adverse impact of
tonnes. CC+6 and CC+8 T
1. PU pads used in side bearers of BOXNM1 Compressive strength of PU pads used to be
Wagons resulted in more incidents of increased so as to enable it to withstand the
breakage. enhanced load.
2. Centre pivot casting is cracking frequently. Cross sectional thickness and strength of centre
pivot casting to be enhanced to bear high pay
load.
3. Grease seal of CTRB are getting displaced Improved quality of grease seals are to be
resulting in oozing of grease and after some used/designed in consultation with bearing
time will result into Hot Axle. manufacturers with better grip and ability to
withstand elevated temperature.
4. CBC coupler components are subjected to CBC component material properties to be
frequent failures like knuckle breakage at upgraded to provide more tensile and
knuckle nose, knuckle pilling lugs breakage compressive strength needed with enhanced
etc. loading of wagons.
5. Increase in case of body bulging and failures Providing more lateral binding members in
of top coping bars at the corner joints. wagons (similar to BOXNHL)
6. Brake blocks are getting frequently cracked. Improvement in material of L-type composite
brake blocks to withstand higher compressive
force generated during braking action.
7. Due to high loading on CTRB, the journal CTRB with ability to withstand higher loads are
under it, is found to have deep grooves. It to be fitted.
leads to pre-mature damage to the axles.
8. Side bearer housing getting damaged. Increase in cross-sectional thickness of side
bearer housing and providing ribs on outer side
for strengthening it.

Problems encountered due to CC+8+2 loading of BOBRN:

1. The enhanced loading results into early perishing of CC pads.

2. E-pads also get gamaged earlier than expected.
3. Knuckle(CBC) wear rate has on increased trends.
4. Extra load on discharge doors which should be made stronger.
5. Since the axle load has been increased to 25T, Railway track will be “heavily loaded” which is
not desirable.
6. The enhanced loaded “BOBRNEL” wheels while negotiating curvature railway track,
increased friction between wheel flange and track is encountered. This result into an early
wear of wheel of BOBRNEL and the railway track. Track curvature should be timely and
properly greased for lubrication.
7. If BOBRNEL wheel gets flat places anyhow, then the impact exerted by this “extra loaded”
BOBRNEL will be catastrophic. Due to this not only the thermite welding joints but 1WC &
EWR may get damaged. A timely detection of brake binding should be done.
