Case study - The Gabba

Answering the demand for
World-Class Lighting
There are few instances where installing
LED lighting makes a more powerful difference
than in the sporting arena.
The GABBA in Brisbane has become the first
stadium to install LED lights for its external
cricket practice nets, which is a breakthrough
as it allows players to prepare for the big games
under the same intense lighting conditions as a
night time test match.
Case studies
In finding a solution for lighting up the GABBA practice nets,
Norman Disney & Young (NDY) Engineering Consultants
considered multiple options and arrangements and
ultimately an LED light solution was chosen for its use
of optical technology. The Sylvania BritelineTM LED Raptor
floodlights were their definitive choice.
Developed by Gerard Lighting to distribute light exactly
where it’s needed, the Raptor provides better control, lower
glare and less spill light. These floodlights also use less than
40% of the energy used in traditional 2KW Metal Halide
floodlights and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Keeping an eye on the ball
The site size and its location within the Gabba precinct,
placed some significant constraints on pole location and
heights, being critical for the optimal delivery of vertical
illumination essential for batsmen in following the flight of
the ball.
To ensure the vertical illumination requirements in the
design of the lighting scheme – the biggest challenge,
computer modelling of the floodlight aiming was
completed, with real life results ultimately superseding
that of the computer modelling predictions in all aspects.
“As more and more sports venues are converting to Gerard
Lighting’s Sylvania BritelineTM LED Raptor floodlights,
it’s exciting to see how the adoption of this Australian
designed product is having such a positive impact on the

Delivery with a ‘testing’ deadline
All parties involved were under very tight procurement
and construction schedules, with the construction only
starting in early November and installation completed and
operational by the first week of December in time for the
first Brisbane test match of summer 2016/17.
A flexible lighting scheme, dimmable for general
illumination for promotional events out of cricket season
periods was achieved, while complementing the main
oval lighting augmentation recently completed, also a
collaboration between Gerard Lighting Pty Ltd and NDY.

South Belgrave Oval, Victoria

More than a sporting field, South Belgrave Oval in Victoria
is also a hub for the whole community, a place to come
together. So, when Gerard Lighting Group was asked to
light up the oval, they jumped at the chance, introducing
an innovative lighting technology never-before used on a
community sports oval which will save 70 per cent on energy
bills and provide a magnificently bright space for all to enjoy.
Gerard Lighting Group, which has been operating in Australia
for more than 100 years, decided to install Sylvania
Briteline™ LED Raptor floodlights at the oval. However, there
was some resistance initially to the use of LED lights, due
to installation costs and lack of proven performance. But
the Council and the South Belgrave Football Club worked
together to find the evidence, which demonstrated the
benefits of the technology and the massive cost savings that
would be achieved with LED oval lighting.

South Belgrave Oval is one of the pioneering community
football clubs to take up the LED Technology at its
emergence by instaling LED floodlighting on an AFL
oval, one of 2,700 sporting ovals across Australia. This
LED installation will be used throughout the entire oval
which is home to AFL players ranging from four to ten
in the Auskick group, juniors, seniors, all the way up to
the veteran players who are 35 years old and above. The
South Belgrave Cricket Club component of the oval caters
for three senior, veteran and junior sides, and with the
introduction of AFL Women’s competitions, there is a high
demand on access to more sporting ovals. The quality and
performance of Sylvania Briteline™ LED Raptor floodlights,
allows South Belgrave and the overall community to reap
the benefits of the additional access to this oval.

the Sylvania Briteline™ LED Raptor, which has become
the new benchmark in LED sports and area lighting. With
efficiency in its DNA, the Sylvania Briteline™ LED Raptor
produces a high lumen output with less power, saving
more than 40% energy than a traditional 2KW Metal halide
floodlights and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
“The new Sylvania Briteline™ LED Raptor floodlights will
more than pay for themselves in a very short period of
time with the reduced energy and maintenance costs,”
says Ian Bakens, Development Coordinator, Belgrave
South Sporting Precinct. “What excites us most is that
we can now provide our players, their supporters and
everyone who enjoys the South Belgrave Oval a state-of-
the-art playing field.”
The installation of Sylvania Briteline™ LED Raptor
floodlights have met a total saving of 70 per cent
on power bills and an even bigger savings in the
repairs and maintenance component – this has
reduced the demand on lamp replacements on
traditional floodlights, which not only have financial
commitments but also require the volunteers of
the club to manage and facilitate the logistics to
undertake the works. With Sylvania Briteline™ LED
Raptor floodlights, there are only five yearly cleaning
schedules required.

The additional funds required for the oval lighting re-
design, was raised through the Federal Government’s
infrastructure funding program as well as local and
Victorian Government fundraising initiatives. In addition,
once senior management of the Shire were convinced,
and with the support of the local Councillor Mike Clarke,
additional funding was granted getting them over the line
and raising the extra $85,000 needed on top of $125,000
already allocated to the project.
Taking only one week to fully install, the Sylvania Briteline™
LED Raptor floodlights with 50 lux and 100 lux lighting
level options, have enhanced player performance and
spectator experience. With precision aiming capability and
minimised glare, players, officials and spectators can see
the spin of the ball or other on-field action with extreme
accuracy and clarity.
“The uniformity of the light around the whole oval surface,
both at the 100 lux level and the reduced 50 lux level has
been incredible,” continues Bakens. “The pure white colour
of the LED light compared with the more yellow type of
light you get from metal halide light technology has made
for a much more enjoyable and efficient experience for
players on the field.”

The first professional AFL game was played at South
Belgrave Oval on April 2, 2017. The players, umpires
and club fans in attendance all reacted positively to the
addition of the Sylvania Briteline™ LED Raptor floodlights.
“It’s as bright as day out there with the new lights. They
don’t create any shadows, allowing me to track every
movement of the ball. I think they’re doing the job well,”
one player said.
Operationally, the Sylvania Briteline™ LED Raptor
floodlights have the capability to turn the LED lights on
and off at will, whenever needed with no cooling down
or warming up period. Research also suggests sports
people perform better playing under whiter rather than
yellow light.

All eyes are on the South Belgrave Oval this year and the
